history

Hornindal was an independent municipality from 1867 to 1964 and again from 1977 to 2019. In 1867 it was created when the Eid municipality was split into two parishes. In 1964 Hornindal was dissolved and part of it was incorporated back into Eid, another part into the Stryn commune . Thirteen years later, in 1977 the part that was incorporated into Stryn was again an independent municipality called Hornindal.

Hornindal has belonged to the province of Sogn og Fjordane , which became part of the newly created province of Vestland on January 1, 2020 . However, the former municipality of Hornindal is now not part of the Vestland province, as Hornindal was merged with the neighboring municipality of Volda on January 1, 2020, into their province of Møre og Romsdal . Both municipalities spoke in advance that they should be merged.

Municipal coat of arms
