Marriage and virgin stone
The marriage and virgin stone (Norwegian poison stones / Jomfrusteinen ) is a stone on the Horndøla Bridge in the Norwegian municipality of Volda .
The striking stone is at the northeast end of the bridge. It has an approximately circular hole in its center.
According to legend, two traditions are associated with the stone. It is said to have been the custom that bridal procession wandered to the stone and the bride then crawled through the opening of the stone. In the event that she failed, she was considered possibly pregnant, otherwise an existing premarital pregnancy was refuted. In another variant, shepherds who worked on the alpine pastures in the area are said to have crawled through the stone only in May and then after finishing their work in late summer. You could tell from this whether they had led a dissolute life over the summer.
