occupation

A Wide Heart is a German film drama that is based on the life of Isa Vermehren (1918–2009). The first broadcast was on April 1, 2013 on ZDF .

action

The film is about the Vermehren family, who stick together even when their daughter Isa provokes National Socialists at her graduation ceremony and is therefore not allowed to practice her profession as a teacher. Then she decides to become a cabaret artist, which her mother Petra is not impressed with. However, Isa manages to gain recognition as a singer and falls in love with the pianist Laurenz Weber. Brother Erich finally introduces her to Countess Elisabeth von Plettenberg , and they both fall in love. The father Kurt , head of the family, has a lover, about which the mother Petra also learns. Despite these and other trials, the family sticks together. Erich goes to London via Istanbul with his wife Elisabeth, whom he has meanwhile married. Even when the Second World War was announced and then broke out, the rest of the family stuck together, just as half the family (father Kurt, mother Petra, son Michael and Isa) was taken into kin custody.

In the Ravensbrück concentration camp, Isa finally meets Danuta, a nun who enjoys unrestricted respect in the concentration camp and brings Isa closer to her faith. During this time, the mother Petra and father Kurt are moved to the same cell, and brother Michael is in the neighboring cell, who is picked up a short time later and whose whereabouts appear uncertain. When the war is over, Isa is on a collective transport. This is finally stopped by American soldiers, and the German guards surrender so that the prisoners can be released.

Isa goes back home, finds her father's lover in her parents' house and lets her live there. Isa’s parents are also released and eventually return home. Michael, however, has disappeared, for which the Erich family blames for going it alone. Isa then travels to London to reconcile Erich and his parents, which initially fails. Back from London, Isa explains to her family that she will join the Sister of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . When she is dressed as a novice , she receives a visit from her brother Erich and they both go to the monastery courtyard, where their parents and Michael are waiting for them.

reception

“The subtitle 'Fateful Years of a German Family' promises more, there is not much to be seen of the war apart from family liability. As if the war had passed the family. However, the film claims to show only one aspect of Isa Vermehren 's life. Your way to God. "

"Historical, melodramatically tinted (television) family epic, which operates on bombast and emotionality with the usual means, but at the same time strives for differentiated figure drawing."
