Beste Bescherung is a German television film by Rainer Kaufmann from 2013. The Christmas film is the third film in the family history with Friedrich von Thun and Sophie von Kessel , after The best comes first and In the best families (2012) , which in 2015 with The best of all Life continued.

action

For Christmas, the four Maillinger siblings want to spend the good time together in peace and quiet. That is why Miriam, who is now heavily pregnant, invited Anna, Vince and Tom with their respective attachments to her friend's farm. This project threatens to fail because her unpredictable father Karl appears uninvited in the idyllic wasteland because he is on the run from tax investigators. Reluctantly, the children grant asylum to the family patriarch, who, contrary to his custom, has to be content with quite primitive accommodation.

The usual friction and quarrels with him are not long in coming. Miriam’s future mother-in-law Rosalie is always a simple personality. She adopts Karl's idiosyncrasies without prejudice, but expects the extended family to host this year's nativity play. The tradition of the small congregation dictates that the family expecting a child should take on this task. At first, the siblings are not at all enthusiastic about it. For the sake of the pregnant Miriam, however, they agree to it. Tom, who actually wanted to get some rest from his Africa tasks, takes over the direction and automatically brings a political note to the "play". He gives his father the role of the hard-hearted host, which means he has to put up with allusions to himself again and again. He would like to see Anna and her friend Ben as happy Maria and Joseph, which is difficult for them because their relationship is currently in a crisis.

Karl has great need to keep his tax problems a secret from his children. Since he arrived with a suitcase full of black money, he is giving away part of it to his children, who are very amazed to see their stingy father suddenly being so generous. But a surprise awaits Karl too, because his second wife Dina, from whom he had just separated, has followed him and has now also arrived at the farm. In the middle of the rehearsals for the nativity play, Miriam went into labor. Ben, a practicing gynecologist, provides assistance, and so the child is born on December 24th. Actually everything seems perfect, but Karl's children discover his black money and fear that they will be held liable if they are reported. They urge their father to report himself, which he secretly has to get back from the mailbox.

Through their nativity play, the family unexpectedly got closer again. Your performance will be a great success and they are happy to have spent the Christmas season together. Only Karl remains a little depressed, because Dina has run off with his embezzled taxpayers' money and hopes to lure him to Moldova.

Reviews

Sidney Schering fromquote meter assessed: “The plot deliberately babbles quietly. There is no proverbial (let alone a literal) ticking time bomb that artificially drives the plot forward, instead Kaufmann talks calmly about the holiday preparations of the interesting family, which gives the characters enough space to unfold. Thus, the characters' disputes do not seem unnecessarily melodramatic, at the same time the isolated moments full of harmony are pleasantly calm thanks to this relaxed approach, instead of dripping with Christmas kitsch. All in all, 'Beste Bescherung' lets its audience play little mice at a pointed, yet realistic Christmas party and experience an entertaining drama. "

Rainer Tittelbach from Tittelbach.tv ranked the production in first place in his top 15 Christmas films in 2016 and said: “The festival of festivals is more than just a catalyst for the lack of peace in a family of manufacturers in 'Beste Bescherung'. The film […] is a Christmas film, a family story and a comedy in a relationship. A witty, realistic feel-good film, snappy & ironic instead of a romantic search for happiness. The centerpiece: the characters. Star: the ensemble. The most striking feature: the open dramaturgy. There is something French in the pictures, the pace as light as a feather. You can feel the zest for life on the edge of improvisation. Is there a better Christmas TV movie ?! "
