content
Bastian is about a prospective teacher in Munich who, after graduating, savored the last of his freedom before starting his first job. He falls in love with a young doctor whom he tries to conquer with his unconventional manner, which he finally succeeds. Bastian is very good-natured, and his willingness to help often brings him into unpleasant situations; he lets a young mother, with whom he had a relationship years ago, live with him and finally “fled” to his girlfriend. At the end of the novel, reality catches up with him; he has to face it in the form of his job as a primary school teacher in the Bavarian Forest.
