action

On the train, the senior government councilor and tax officer Hieronymus Spitz and his dog Tobby share a compartment with a young woman and toddler. Hieronymus lovingly feeds his dog, which, unlike humans, he trusts, and reacts angrily to questions from the woman who wants to know whether he lives alone and in good circumstances. The young woman gets off at a train station and leaves her child and suitcase with Hieronymus. Soon it becomes clear from a letter enclosed in the suitcase that the young woman, whose name is Winnie, has left her child behind out of desperation. Hieronymus is not very enthusiastic, but takes the boy named Niki into his apartment for the time being. The landlady Jette is horrified at first, but quickly succumbs to Niki's charm. Instead of giving him to the children's home as planned , Hieronymus and Jette become Niki's surrogate parents, lovingly furnish him with a nursery and plan his adoption .

Winnie left her illegitimate child behind because her fiancé Paul knew nothing about Niki and otherwise would have broken the connection with Winnie immediately. The cautious advance of Winnie's landlady, Ms. Altmann, who indirectly describes Paul Winnie's fate, makes it clear that he would reject an illegitimate child and cast off his girlfriend. He plans to marry Winnie and emigrate to America with her a short time later . If Winnie first wants to leave her past behind her as quickly as possible, she escapes from the steamer going to America shortly before casting off. Without money, she follows Niki's trail to Munich , but loses it there. She moves her wedding ring and eventually has to spend the night as a homeless person in shelters and churches. A first search request for Niki that appears in the newspaper is unsuccessful, as Jette hides the newspaper from Hieronymus.

Meanwhile, Paul has learned the truth about Jette and the child from Mrs. Altmann. After the first stubborn defense, he is soon ready not only to forgive Winnie, but also to take on father duties. Winnie collapses at a police station where she wants to put her deed on record and is admitted to a hospital, where Paul finds her again. The police have meanwhile been looking for Hieronymus, who is reported by a resident of the house. Hieronymus, however, refuses to give Niki back because he not only looked after parents with Jette instead of Niki, but also received a "deed of gift" with the letter found in the suitcase at the time. Niki has completely changed the once solitary man. This is also noticeable in the tax authorities, for example it grants considerable tax savings in cases of alimony .

Paul tries to kidnap Niki, but is stopped by angry Hieronymus. A little later, Winnie is allowed to see Niki briefly, but it turns out that the child is now clearly influenced by Hieronymus and Jette. Only a visit from Paul, who makes the two foster parents aware of the problem that they can currently give Niki all their love in their old age, but the duration would be much shorter than with him and Winnie, makes Hieronymus thoughtful. After a long brooding night, he agrees to hand over Nikis to his parents and leaves the house with Tobby. He doesn't want to say goodbye to Niki, who is now being picked up by Winnie and Paul.

criticism

Der Spiegel called my name Niki a "time film without debris".

The lexicon of international films praised my name as Niki as "a family story with warmth and humor that unobtrusively brings an ethical point of view into play." In the online edition, however, it is limited to describing the film as partially "humorous" and as an "entertaining family story" to call.

The Protestant film observer also drew a positive conclusion: "A film that tactfully treats the subject, which is seductive to be depicted."
