action

Only a few weeks before the end of the Second World War , Willi and Maria Kluge got married. However, their happiness together lasted only a few hours before they were separated from each other. Eight years have now passed since they last saw each other. Now at last Maria is allowed to return home from Soviet captivity. However, it does not come alone; with her is a toddler who she gave birth to through unfortunate entanglements during the hardships of her captivity. First of all, Maria is determined to face the husband with her child and tell him the truth straight away; but then she decides to bring the news to Willi in small steps. Maria's companion, a skilled doctor, is taking care of the baby.

After the end of the war, Willi quickly found his way back to civilian life and built a car repair shop. Ever since he received the first sign of life from his wife, he has always faithfully waited for her. Now, however, Mary's confession hits him like a blow. However, his love for Mary is stronger than the thought of her adultery. That's why he takes Maria's baby into his household.

One day Franz Martens, the child's father, without knowing anything about its existence, stands at the door. He found out Maria's whereabouts and wants to greet her innocently. But now Willi is suspicious and files for divorce. Maria, however, is not discouraged by this and continues to fight for Willi's love. Finally reason wins; Willi and Maria find each other again.

Production notes

The shooting was done in the Bavaria Film studios in the Geiselgasteig district of Grünwald and in Munich. The buildings were created by the production designers Erich Kettelhut and Johannes Ott . Charlotte Flemming was responsible for the costumes . Wilhelm Sperber took over the production management. The world premiere took place on July 29, 1954 in Frankfurt am Main.

criticism

The lexicon of international films doesn't think much of the film : "Despite the hard work of the actors, it's not a serious, realistic time drama, but a noisy, psychologically undifferentiated entertainment film."

Kino.de judges that the director was able to rely on well-known actors for his post-war drama, which was not always very coherent, but that it still did not make the story credible. The result is just speculative entertainment.
