A love story is a German fiction film directed by Rudolf Jugert in 1953 . The main roles are played by Hildegard Knef , OW Fischer and Viktor de Kowa . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Carl Zuckmayer , who was also involved in the script.
action
The framework for action is provided by the reign of Frederick the Great in the middle / end of the 18th century. The Seven Years' War was just a year ago when on New Year's Eve 1764 Rittmeister Jost von Fredersdorff, once a hero of the past battles of Roßbach and Leuthen (1757), met the former actress Lilli Schallweiss. She was once the mistress of Major von Prittwitz, but was naturally not considered "befitting" for higher orders. Jost and Lilli love each other very much and want to get married soon, but again the difference in class and the bad reputation of artists, especially actors, stand in the way of a marriage with a noble officer.
Not only Jost's relatives are resisting this relationship, his superiors are also strictly against it, and so his marriage proposal is not even forwarded to the “top”. Nevertheless, Jost was not deterred and submitted his departure from the Prussian army. But this acknowledgment is not approved either, and Fredersdorff summons it to Berlin without further ado. In order to finally break his will, the superiors put Jost von Fredersdorff under arrest. The Rittmeister, however, is indomitable, and so it is Lilli who makes a decision for both of them. She renounces love and a future together leaves the city so as not to harm her Jost more than before.

Reviews
In Die Zeit we can read that this film adaptation was “a very demanding undertaking, since the inner tension in the conflict between duty and love in a Frederick officer could hardly be assigned an eventful external action. Eggebrecht helped himself at the beginning with a fictional history that placed Major von Fredersdorff as a gentleman and womanizer in the center, and - he changed the ending. Nothing more of the compelling and only justified hopelessness to which people of that time were exposed through society and prevailing morality. (...) Nevertheless, Rudolf Jugert turned it into a film that is impressive. The individual scenes offer a minimum of plot in the usual cinematic sense. The silent game must become an expression of the tragedy that lies over the fate of the two lovers. And it is precisely in this that the clever use of Hildegard Knef's acting as Lili shows. (...) OW Fischer ... plays the not very grateful role as well as he can, but there is no Brandenburg officer in him. In contrast, this tone, this exactness, hits Viktor de Kowa excellently. He is excited and sure, the happy embodiment of Count Prittwitz. "
In the lexicon of international films it says: "In terms of direction and performance, a respectable production by Erich Pommer."
