action

Martin Manz is a police officer in the Bavarian province, loving husband of the heavily pregnant Anja, an exemplary son who takes care of his old father and is a respected director of the handball club.

He has to investigate Miriam's accident. She was hit by a car in the woods one night and is the daughter of his best friend Frank. She is in a coma and it is uncertain if she will ever wake up again. Her father wants to find the person who did this to his daughter, neglecting his work, his youth handball team, whose coach he is, and even attacks someone who is not involved because he drives a damaged car and does not want to tell him how the damage was caused is.

Martin disappears evidence of the accident, hides his damaged car in his father's barn and tries to dissuade Frank from looking for the culprit. Walter Nachtheim, his father's retired doctor with alcoholism, has seen through that Martin must be the driver of the accident and gives him a deadline to face himself. Martin tries several times to confess everything to his wife and writes a letter to Frank, but he can never bring himself to clean it up.

So he tries to negotiate more time and silence the doctor with a large sum of money. But after he firmly promised his wife to buy a house, he cannot keep the offer. He visits the doctor in his house, kills him and manipulates his apartment so that it looks like a fatal fall down a staircase. He inflicts damage on the doctor's car, as befits Miriam's accident. When Martin thinks he's got his life back on track, Frank accidentally sees his damaged car in the barn. He waits for his friend in the police station, tells him to surrender immediately and when Martin hesitates, Frank rushes at him and beats him up. After he has let go of Martin, the latter shoots his best friend and later claims to have acted in self-defense.

In the final scene he is honored by his club for his heroic deeds. Miriam, his first victim, sits in the audience - in a wheelchair - and stares at him in silence.

Reviews

Thilo Wydra from Tagesspiegel thinks that this “colored, modern film noir ” is “highly suggestive” and “has a rare potential for manipulation”; Rainer Kaufmann works on a similar principle as Alfred Hitchcock once did: Although it was clear from the start that the supposedly good police officer was the bad one, as a spectator one had to follow him and develop sympathy for him. That puts you in a veritable dilemma. Here “a small masterpiece of contemporary German television film has succeeded”.

Tilmann P. Gangloff saw an "amazingly" captivating film that was "extremely exciting" towards the end. This is also thanks to the ability of the main actor Albrecht Schuch, who is able to "subtly convey the enormous intensity of the contradicting emotions that seep in Martin". The staging is reserved; An idyll is created in warm, earthy colors that is counteracted by Richard Ruzicka's music and thus recognizable as deceptive.

Rainer Tittelbach sees the strengths of this film in the narrative perspective and the "politics of emotions", which allow the viewer to "take the side of the main character" and thus bind him emotionally to her. In this entanglement, the viewer is encouraged to form their own judgment.
