Klaus Peter Heiss (born August 21, 1941 in Brixen , South Tyrol; † July 24, 2010 there ) was a space scientist, NASA space expert and US government advisor.

Live and act

Klaus Peter Heiss' life was focused on science and space research. For many years he campaigned for the right to vote for Austrians abroad , which he ultimately achieved.

After attending the Franciscan high school in Bozen , Klaus Peter Heiss studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business . He became an active member of the AKV Aggstein Wien in the ÖKV . In Vienna Heiss met Professor Oskar Morgenstern from Princeton University and came into contact with him. In 1964 Heiss became a Dr.rer.comm. doctorate, studied at the Bocconi in Milan and then went to Princeton University in the USA, where he worked as an assistant to Prof. Oskar Morgenstern.

Heiss dealt there with game theory , econometric research, economic mathematics and the peaceful use of atomic energy, he designed models for weapon control, disarmament programs and transport systems. His research also contributed to the development of the space shuttle . Heiss was the initiator of the Columbus 500 Space Sail Cup , whereby the solar light pressure is to be used for space transport, and he also worked out proposals for space communication and space defense.

Heiss was founder, president and director of Econ inc, founder and president of the Three Sigma Group and founding member of High Frontier Europe. In terms of space communication, Heiss founded Oeco Tel based in Vienna, which was later bought by Bank Austria. Heiss played a decisive role in the private financing of space transport (Space Tran Corp), which ultimately led to a fundamental reorientation of US space policy. Because Heiss showed the possibilities of remote sensing systems from space, the private possession of corresponding remote sensing data was prohibited by law in the USA in 1984.

In 1990 and 1994 Heiss campaigned unsuccessfully in Vienna with a program that he called the modified Tyrolean freedoms : suffrage for everyone at home and abroad, compliance with the tripartite division of state power, abolition of compulsory club membership in parliament and other compulsory membership, appreciation of the Work of older citizens and privatization of state property and all state monopolies.

Heiss spent the last years of his life in Brixen. On July 24, 2010, Heiss succumbed to the consequences of cancer.

Honors

Heiss professional achievements were recognized with awards, most recently he received the Medal of Honor of the City of Brixen in 2009. In addition, there is the “NASA Public Service Award” for extraordinary achievements in the US space program (1981) and the “NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal” for extraordinary pioneering work in space research (2008).

Heiss received the Gold Medal of Honor of the Austrians Abroad because he fought for 20 years - ultimately successfully - for the right to vote for Austrian citizens living abroad and during this time appealed to the Constitutional Court (Austria) several times .
