The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) ( German  International Institute for Strategic Studies ) is a British research institute (or think tank ) founded in 1958 in the field of international relations and strategic studies .

It describes itself as the world's leading authority on military policy and politico-military conflicts. The headquarters are in Arundel House in London . There are offices in Washington, DC (USA), Singapore and Bahrain .

The IISS publishes Survival , a quarterly journal on international affairs.

Since 1958 the IISS has published The Military Balance , a detailed overview of the global military potential. It was offered in a German translation by Bernard & Graefe Verlag from 1979 to 1986 - at the time of the so-called "Second Cold War ". The institute's annual reports assess the military strength of almost all countries. It also contains a list of the current armed conflicts in the world.

There are regional offices in Washington, DC , USA (IISS-US), Singapore (IISS-Asia) and Manama , Bahrain (IISS-Middle East). With the IISS Asia Security Summit: The Shangri-La Dialogue , the institute is organizing a security conference in the Asia-Pacific region, in which Germany, among others, is participating. In addition, the institute organizes the IISS Manama Dialogue, the most important security conference in the Near and Middle East .

According to research by Andrew Feinstein , the IISS is mainly funded by Boeing , Airbus , Mitsubishi and other large arms manufacturers .
