Gerald Schöpfer (born January 16, 1944 in Graz ) is an Austrian economic historian and politician ( ÖVP ). He was the head of the Institute for Economic, Social and Corporate History at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . From April 2004 to October 2005 he was a member of the Styrian provincial government (Provincial Council for Economy and Europe) and from October 2005 to October 2010 a member of the Styrian Landtag .

Gerald Schöpfer has been President of the Austrian Red Cross since May 2013 .

Career

Gerald Schöpfer studied law and political science at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz as a working student (journalist, reviewer, founder of the student cabaret "Der Hammer" in the Forum Stadtpark , from 1966 to 1968 claims advisor for an insurance company). In 1967 he completed his law studies with a professional doctorate and in 1972 his degree in political science with a doctorate. From 1968 Gerald Schöpfer was an assistant at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz, where he qualified as a professor in 1975 in economic and social history. In 1977 Schöpfer was appointed full professor and head of the Institute for Economic and Social History at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz.

Schöpfer's research and teaching activities cover general economic and social history with a focus on Austria and the 19th and 20th centuries, age research , public history and oral history .

On April 9, 2004 Gerald Schöpfer was elected to the State Councilor for Economy and Europe at the suggestion of Governor Waltraud Klasnic . From October 2005 to October 2010 he was a member of the Styrian Landtag and parliamentary group spokesman for education, science and research. Due to his work in the Styrian regional government, Gerald Schöpfer was released from duty as a professor. In July 2006 he took over the management of the Institute for Economic, Social and Corporate History at the Karl-Franzens University and retired in October 2012.
