Martin Dahinden
Martin Dahinden (born January 8, 1955 in Zurich ) is a Swiss diplomat and was the Swiss Ambassador to the United States of America from 2014 to 2019 .
Career
Martin Dahinden completed a degree in business administration at the University of Zurich with a doctorate . After joining the diplomatic service in 1987, he was a member of the Swiss delegation to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade ( GATT ), Director of the International Center for Humanitarian Demining in Geneva (GICHD) and to the Swiss Embassy in France and Nigeria (1989–1991) as well as temporarily with the Swiss mission to the UN in New York and as deputy head of the Swiss mission to NATO in Brussels (1997–2000).
From 2004 to 2008 Dahinden was Director of Resources in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). Before being appointed ambassador to the USA , he was head of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) at the FDFA from 2008 to 2014 .
Martin Dahinden is married and has two children. After retiring from the diplomatic service, he teaches at the University of Zurich , is a member of the Advisory Group of UNICEF and on board the World Demographic Forum and ICT4Peace.
In July 2016, Dahinden published a book on Swiss cuisine with the title “Swiss Kitchen Secrets”. Among other things, it shows their influences on American cuisine.
Ambassador to the United States of America
On November 18, 2014, Martin Dahinden presented his credentials to US President Barack Obama . Its task was, among other things, to promote exchange and cooperation between the two countries in the fields of politics, economy and trade, science, research and training, as well as technology and culture. Due to his mandate, he was also responsible for the consular services, the Swiss Business Hub USA and the two Swissnex locations in the USA. Dahinden referred to the two nations as sister republics , referring to a term used in the late 18th and 19th centuries, and in particular to the efforts of both countries to achieve global peace and stability in the world.
