Manuel Sager

Manuel Sager (* 1955 in Menziken ) is a Swiss diplomat . From 2010 to August 2014 he was the Swiss ambassador to the United States and from November 2014 to April 2020 he was the head of the Swiss Federal Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Life

Manuel Sager studied law at the University of Zurich . Postgraduate he received in 1985 by the Duke University in Durham , North Carolina the title Master of Laws . In 1986 he was admitted to the Arizona bar and then worked for two years as a lawyer with the law firm O'Connor, Cavanagh, Anderson, Killingsworth and Beshears in Phoenix . He received his doctorate in law from the University of Zurich in 1995. He received his doctorate on the subject of "The International Commission of Inquiry in accordance with Article 90 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions of 1949". From September to October 2014, he teaches development finance as a visiting professor at Duke University .

Diplomatic career

Manuel Sager's career at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) began in 1988. During his diplomatic training, he worked in Bern and Athens . From 1990 to 1995 he worked in the Directorate for International Law of the FDFA and from 1995 to 1999 as Deputy Consul General in New York . From 1999 to 2001 he was head of the department of communication at the Swiss Embassy in Washington, DC From 2001 to 2002 he directed the Liaison Office of Human Rights in the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council of NATO . From 2002 to 2005 he was again head of communications, first in the FDFA, then in the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (FDEA).

From 2005 to 2008 Manuel Sager was Ambassador Executive Director of the London European Bank for Reconstruction and Development . Also in the rank of ambassador, he was Head of Political Affairs at the Swiss Foreign Ministry from 2008 to 2010.

On October 18, 2010, he was appointed Swiss Ambassador to the United States to succeed Urs Ziswiler . He was accredited with Barack Obama on December 7, 2010. In October 2013, the Federal Council decided that Manuel Sager would succeed Martin Dahinden as the new head of the Swiss Federal Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), while Martin Dahinden would take over will replace as ambassador in Washington. Manuel Sager took up office at the SDC on November 1, 2014 and held it until April 30, 2020, when he retired. Patricia Danzi was his successor as SDC director .
