Albert A. Stahel

Albert Alexander Stahel (born March 3, 1943 in Zurich ; resident in Zurich and Turbenthal ) is a Swiss political and economic scientist , professor of strategic studies at the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich , author of numerous specialist books on geopolitics and geostrategy and politicians ( SD , previously GLP , previously SVP ).

Life

After obtaining a licentiate in economics from the University of Zurich in 1970, Stahel completed a study and research stay at the University of Lancaster from 1972 to 1973 . In 1973 he obtained a doctorate in economics from the University of Zurich. From 1973 to 1979 he was head of the research center for basic security studies at the Central Office for Overall Defense in Bern and from 1975 to 1979 lecturer at the University of St. Gallen (HSG).

In 1979 he completed his habilitation at the University of Zurich in political science with a focus on strategic studies . From 1980 to 2006 he was a full-time lecturer for strategic studies at the Military Academy of the ETH Zurich and from 1986 to 2010 he read as adjunct professor at the University of Zurich in the context of political science. From 1989 to 1992 he taught international relations in the Political Science Department of the University of Geneva .

In 2006 he founded the Institute for Strategic Studies in Wädenswil . The institute regularly publishes articles and contributions on the topics of strategy and contemporary wars.

Since 2006 he has been Managing Director and Vice President of the “Humanitarian Switzerland” forum.

On January 31, 2010 he was elected for the SVP in the municipal council of Wädenswil. In May 2011 he joined the Green Liberals because, unlike the SVP, he was in favor of phasing out nuclear power after the Fukushima nuclear disaster . Since the GLP was against the procurement of the Gripen without consulting him as an expert at all, he has been a member of the Swiss Democrats since November 2013. In March 2014, however, he was no longer re-elected as a councilor.

Stahel is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London and the Clausewitz Society in Hamburg . He is married and has two children.

His research and fields of activity include Swiss security policy , NBC weapons , air power , humanitarian interventions , conflict resolution strategies , nation building , nuclear strategy , air wars, contemporary conflicts and wars, asymmetrical warfare , terrorism, guerrilla, civil and tribal wars and the organized Crime . Since 2003 he has analyzed the strategic development in Iraq and Afghanistan in particular. He spent various research stays in Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Russia and the USA.
