Christian Esser

Christian Esser (born May 7, 1973 in Stolberg (Rhld.) ) Is a German journalist .

Life

Esser began training as a bank clerk at Sparkasse Aachen in 1991 , which he completed in 1993. During this time he also worked as a freelancer for Aachener Nachrichten . Then he made up for the Abitur at the Euregio-Kolleg in Würselen on the second educational path.

From 1995 to 2001 Christian Esser studied New German Literature with the minor subjects Political Science, Modern History and African Political Science at the Universities of Cologne, Zurich and Berlin. During this time he gained journalistic experience a. a. as a freelancer for the French-language daily newspaper La Tribune and in the Bonn parliamentary office of the taz as well as an intern at the Leipziger Volkszeitung . In 2000 he interned for a few months in the Berlin editorial team of the Hamburger Wochenblatt Der Spiegel and the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

After another stopover, first as an author and later as an editor in the Berlin office of the Max magazine , he came to ZDF in 2003 and has since worked as an editor and reporter for the political magazine Frontal 21 . His focus is investigative research. His work has received several awards: In 2009, the readers of the trade journal Wirtschaftsjournalist together with Astrid Randerath voted him “Business Journalists of the Year” in the radio / TV category. For the ZDFzoom report "Mister Karstadt - The Enigmatic Nicolas Berggruen" broadcast in March 2012, he and Lutz Ackermann received the German Television Award, the German Business Film Award and the Helmut Schmidt Journalist Award. In 2015 Christian Esser and Birte Meier were awarded the German Business Film Prize 2015 for the Frontal 21 documentary "The Great Samwer Show - The Billionaire Businesses of the Zalando Boys".

In November 2016, together with his colleague Birte Meier, he uncovered the “Rent-a-Sozi” affair.

Christian Esser is also a non-fiction author. He published the "Black Book Deutsche Bahn", "The Executors - Who Solves Problems for Companies" and "A Matter of the Heart - Organ Donation: When Death Saves Lives" (with Nataly Bleuel & Alena Schröder ).

Christian Esser is married and has one son.
