The University of St. Gallen - University of Economics, Law and Social Sciences ( HSG ) - is located on the Rosenberg in the Swiss city of St. Gallen . The University of St. Gallen is one of the smaller universities in Switzerland, but at the same time it is home to the largest economics faculty in German-speaking countries. The university is run by the canton of St. Gallen . The university is accredited by AACSB , EQUIS and AMBA ( Triple Crown ) and belongs to the associations CEMS , PIM, APSIA, GBSN, GRLI, PRME, swissuniversities, IHK, KGV, SGBA, WISG and the International Lake Constance University . According to international classifications (“ranking”), the University of St. Gallen is one of the leading business schools in Europe.
history
On May 25, 1898, the Grand Council of the Canton of St. Gallen decided to establish a traffic school and a secondary school (academy) for trade, traffic and administration in St. Gallen. The then Landammann and Head of the Economics Department Theodor Curti is considered the actual founder . In 1899 the commercial academy started its lectures. This makes it one of the oldest universities of its kind in the world. From 1911 it was called the commercial college . In 1938 it was transformed from a foundation under private law into a state institution and in 1939 it was granted the right to award doctorates.
In 1963 the university moved into a specially built new building and also changed its name to the University of Economics and Social Sciences . The new building was designed for 900 students, but in the winter semester 1963/64 there were 1150 enrolled.
With the entry of the Higher Education Act of 1989, the HSG was renamed St. Gallen University of Economics, Law and Social Sciences . The name was thus adapted to the actual subject areas: the HSG has had its own legal course since 1978. The library building was also moved into in 1989, and the number of students at that time was over 3900.
In February 1994, the St. Gallen Parliament passed a proposal for the revision of the University Act, which among other things led to the renaming of the university to the University of St. Gallen (keeping the abbreviation HSG ).
In the 2001/02 winter semester, the training was switched to the two-tier system with a bachelor's and master's degree, with which the HSG assumed the pioneering role in Switzerland.
In mid-2005, the citizens of St. Gallen approved the renovation, redesign and expansion of the HSG with 66.4 percent . The project, which comprises around 80 million Swiss francs, is intended to comprehensively renovate the buildings from the 1960s and to adapt the infrastructure to the changed training by 2011. On October 1 of the same year, the newly founded, self-sustaining Executive School for Management, Technology and Law (ES-HSG) begins its work. It summarizes the activities in postgraduate training in the form of courses and seminars and is the central portal for all further training offers at the University of St. Gallen.
In 2018/19 the university was rocked by a series of scandals. An administrative investigation by the cantonal financial control showed that individual institutes were dealing with expenses in a questionable manner: compensation for bar visits, first-class flights, business lunches without receipts. The parliamentary groups of the SP, Greens, CVP, GLP and FDP in the cantonal parliament suspected that the government and in particular the head of the education department would no longer be able to ensure the control and supervision of the university. They therefore demanded urgent measures.
research
The university is particularly known for its contributions to system-oriented management teaching. The central result of this research work is the St. Gallen management model , which was devised by Hans Ulrich and adapted to the latest findings by Johannes Rüegg-Stürm in 2002 .
The research results of the HSG are made available to the public via the Alexandria research platform.
In the profile areas of the University of St. Gallen, subject areas are combined within and interdisciplinary. Each HSG school is responsible for at least one profile area.
Library
The library is also located on campus. It has existed since the «Handelsakademie» was founded in 1898. In 1911, the institution, called the Handels-Hochschule , moved the books with it from the west wing of the cantonal school to its own rooms on Notkerstrasse. In 1963 the library was given new rooms on the two upper floors of the new building (currently: Building 01) on the Rosenberg. In May 1989, the library building (currently: building 09) next door was moved into, where the main library is still located today.
structure
The focus is on the training and further education of specialists and executives for business, public administration and the administration of justice. The university is divided into schools and institutes. The schools are responsible for teaching and offer bachelor's and master's degrees. The institutes tend to emphasize the practice-oriented character of the university and are accordingly primarily active in the area of practice-oriented research.

Education
Studies at the HSG begin with an assessment year that brings together students from all disciplines and places particular emphasis on a broad basic education. This is followed by a specialization in the bachelor's programs in business administration, economics, law, law with economics and international affairs. A number of specialized Masters courses build on the respective programs.
From September 2012, officers and senior non-commissioned officers can, under certain conditions and with the provision of an additional service, receive credit for their military cadre training with up to 6 ECTS in the “Action Competence” study area.
Since 1996, the Institute for European and International Business Law has been offering an 18-month Master’s degree with a focus on European and International Business Law. The nine study modules of the Executive Master of European and International Business Law take place in Europe, the USA and China.
Foreign applicants are selected by the university in a selection process. The number of foreign students is limited to 25 percent.
Student body and associations
The HSG student body (SHSG) represents the interests of both the students and the clubs. It offers them numerous services and provides a lot of information for them on its website. In addition, the SHSG appears through campaigns such as supporting exchange students.
There are over 100 clubs at the University of St. Gallen. The student magazine Prisma , which has been published since 1969, is part of the club's culture . Around 340 issues have been published so far. The International Students' Committee, an association independent of the university, which consists of around 25 HSG students and organizes the St. Gallen Symposium every year, is best known . Since 1970, the symposium has brought together international decision-makers from politics, business and society with students from all over the world in St. Gallen. The Industrial Club has served as a link between students, the university and industry since 2010 and is now one of the university’s associations with the largest number of members. AIESEC St. Gallen is also well-known : It was founded in 1951, offers an international internship program and organizes conferences. Furthermore, the oikos St. Gallen association at the HSG has been dealing with sustainability since the 1980s. With the help of initiatives and 80 active members, people should be encouraged to make their decisions in harmony with ecology, economy and society. The student management consultancy Esprit St. Gallen , founded in 1988, has existed for almost as long , and in addition to project work, it is also the publisher of the St. Gallen Business Review, which is published twice a year. One of the largest associations with 600 members is DocNet, the doctoral association at the University of St. Gallen, which also organizes the annual DocNet Management Symposium . The remaining clubs are primarily sports clubs, cultural associations, associations of students from other countries or cantons, subject-specific associations in the field of subjects taught at the HSG and student associations . The official alumni organization of the University of St. Gallen is HSG Alumni .
