Bernhard Ehrenzeller

Bernhard Ehrenzeller (born September 5, 1953 in St. Gallen ; resident in Oberbüren SG and Metzerlen SO ) is a Swiss lawyer and judge in the Principality of Liechtenstein . He has been Rector of the University of St. Gallen since February 2020 .

Life

education

Ehrenzeller attended the Metzerlen primary school in the canton of Solothurn . In 1973 he completed the Matura B at the Karl Borromäus college in Altdorf UR . Ehrenzeller studied law at the University of Friborg until 1977 and received his licentiate . In 1980 he received the Canton Solothurn Attorney - and notary public . In 1984 Ehrenzeller received his doctorate with Luzius Wildhaber at the University of Basel on the subject of "The Diocesan Conference of the Diocese of Basel " with summa cum laude . From 1987 Ehrenzeller worked on a comparative law habilitation on "Legislative violence and foreign policy". At the same time, he conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg , the Harvard Law School in Cambridge (Massachusetts) and the Swiss Institute for Comparative Law in Lausanne . In 1992, the law faculty of the University of Basel accepted Ehrenzeller's habilitation thesis based on reports from Luzius Wildhaber and Kurt Eichenberger . On January 14, 1993 he completed his habilitation and was awarded the venia docendi for public law .

Professional career

In the 1980s Ehrenzeller ran for the Christian Democrats for a judge's office in the canton of Solothurn.

From 1991 to 1997 Ehrenzeller was a personal assistant to Federal Councilor Arnold Koller ( CVP , Head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police ). From 1993 he worked as a private lecturer at the University of Basel. From 1994 to 1996 he was a staff member of the project management of the “constitutional reform” of the FDJP as part of the total revision of the federal constitution .

Since 1 April 1997 Ehrenzeller professor for State - and administrative law at the University of St. Gallen and since April 1, 1998 Director of the "Institute for Legal Studies and Legal Practice at the University of St. Gallen." From 2003 to 2011 he was Vice Rector of the University of St. Gallen. Since 2011 he has been a judge for the State Court of the Principality of Liechtenstein . Ehrenzeller was elected as the new rector by the University Council of the University of St. Gallen on January 14, 2019 and confirmed by the government of the Canton of St. Gallen on January 15, 2019. On February 1, 2020 Ehrenzeller succeeded Thomas Bieger as Rector.

Private

Ehrenzeller is married and has two children. Ehrenzeller is a Roman Catholic .
