Thomas Bieger

Thomas Andreas Bieger (born April 26, 1961 in Basel ; legal domicile there ) is a Swiss business and economist. Bieger was rector of the University of St. Gallen from 2011 to 2020 and is a full professor of business administration with a special focus on the tourism industry and director of the Institute for Systemic Management and Public Governance .

Life

Training and research

Thomas Bieger studied business administration at the University of Basel and graduated in 1984 with a licentiate . In 1987 he obtained his doctorate there with a focus on economics and regional economics .

Since then, Bieger has researched and taught at various universities. He was visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck and the Vienna University of Economics and Business , teaching at the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, at the Università Svizzera Italiana in Lugano and in 2005 as a William Evans Fellow at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

Bieger's research heavyweights are service management , destination management , location management , customer behavior , business models and university management.

Professional activities

Bieger was employed in consumer goods marketing and tourism marketing .

From 1985 to 1987 Bieger worked at the Institute for Applied Economic Research at the University of Basel.

From 1985 to 1991 he was a lecturer and from 1988 a member of the school management of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences . There he set up the Higher Technical School for Tourism in 1988 , was responsible for marketing as the technical director and designed the Institute for Tourism Economics .

From 1991 to 1996 he restructured and headed the Academia Engiadina in Samedan with boarding as a private company. He took care of the establishment and affiliation of the higher technical school for tourism in Graubünden .

On February 1, 2011, he became rector of the University of St. Gallen and succeeded the German economist Ernst Mohr .

Bieger wanted to strengthen the position of the HSG as the leading business university in Europe and also achieve a top position in some areas outside of Europe. This objective is important because the competition in the education sector has shifted from a national to a European to a global level in recent years. The HSG will only remain attractive to outstanding lecturers and students in the future if its international reputation is strengthened through top performance in teaching and research. The HSG wants to make the proceeds of this internationalization usable for the region.

In February 2020, constitutional law professor Bernhard Ehrenzeller became the new rector of the university.

Mandates and engagements

Bieger holds the office of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jungfraubahn Holding and the Swiss Society for Hotel Credit .

Since 1996 he has held other mandates on boards of trustees and boards of directors at Migros Ostschweiz (2004–2011), Roland Berger International Consultants , at the International Tourism Symposium in Zermatt , Swiss Aviation Foundation , Olma-Messen (2008–2011), RIGI BAHNEN (2004 –2011), Academia Engadin (1991–2004), Bergbahnen Disentis (1997), Alpine Classic Hotels Service and Private Selection Service (1997–2002), Appenzeller Bahnen (1997–2009), Sportbahnen Elm and Cooperative Mensa HSG (2005–2010 ).

In addition, Thomas Bieger was President of the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS) from 2010 to 2014 . He is currently a member of the boards of EQUIS ( European Quality Improvement System ) and EFMD ( European Foundation for Management Development ), as well as President of the SBB Research Fund . He was President of the Chamber of Universities (2016–2020) and Vice President of Swissuniversities (2016–2020). He was a member of the European Council of Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business

Publications

He is co-editor of Thexis , Tourism Journal , the Swiss Yearbook of the Tourism Industry and the Swiss Yearbook for Transport Economics .

Private

Thomas Bieger is married. He has a daughter and a son.

Bieger was very active in the military and in the rowing club during his studies . He is a retired staff officer .
