Catholic denomination part of the canton of St. Gallen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Catholic denomination part of the canton of St. Gallen is a state canonically established statutory body of the Catholics Roman Catholic confession and is responsible for managing the infrastructure and the tax dollars responsible. It is divided into parishes . The pastoral care of the faithful is the responsibility of the diocese of St. Gallen , whose finances are in turn administered by the denominational part.

history

The Catholic denomination part of the canton of St. Gallen is responsible for the administration of the collegiate church of St. Gallen . The bishop and the diocese administration are housed in the wing of the building to the left of the church.

When French troops occupied Switzerland in 1798 after the outbreak of the French Revolution , the Prince Abbey of St. Gallen was abolished and the Canton of St. Gallen was founded. The abbey assets were divided between the canton and the St. Gallen Catholics.

In 1813 the Catholic denomination was founded and the first administrative council was elected on February 18th. All six Catholic government councilors belonged to it. The Catholic members of the Grand Council formed the Catholic Grand Council College . The denominational part gave itself its own constitution . In 1836 Pope Gregory XVI shared the double diocese of Chur-St. Gallen and established an apostolic vicariate for St. Gallen, from which the diocese of St. Gallen emerged in 1847 .

Inalienable funds and capital investments were used to pay the diocese leadership and the priests at the cathedral and to maintain the building . In 1862 the relationship between church and state was reorganized. Since then, the college has no longer been made up of councilors, but of members elected by the Catholic population.

In 1912, the Catholics of St. Gallen agreed to the introduction of a central tax that finances the tasks of the denominational part and the diocese. In 1994 the Sparkassa der Administration (Sparad) was taken over by the St. Galler Kantonalbank . A risky credit policy led to the liquidation of what was once the third largest regional bank in St. Gallen . In 2006, the denominational part introduced the right to vote for foreigners .

organization

The Abbey Library and the Catholic Cantonal Secondary School are located in the northwest wing of the monastery complex

The church citizens entitled to vote have the right to vote for the Catholic College as well as the right of referendum and initiative . The number of Catholics in the canton of St. Gallen is around 235,000.

The Catholic College is the legislature (parliament) of the denominational part and is made up of 180 elective Catholics from all over the canton. It elects the members of the administrative council, issues the constitution of the denominational part, decides in agreement with the bishop the decrees on institutions of the diocese and the denominational part and decides on the financial budget of the denominational part.

The administrative council is the executive (government) of the denominational part and consists of seven members. It represents the interests of the denominational part and administers the foundations and funds of the denominational part. It oversees the parishes and is an appeals and complaints authority. He supports the Episcopal Ordinariate and administers various institutions of the diocese such as B. St. Gallen Cathedral , the St. Georgen seminary , the St. Gallen Abbey Library or the Catholic Cantonal Secondary School . In addition, the Catholic denomination part in the Gossau region has around 320 hectares of forest.

The Catholic denomination part of the canton of St. Gallen is a member of the Roman Catholic Central Conference of Switzerland .
