history

Early history

Alemannic grave finds in Niederuzwil from the 3rd century indicate a settlement at that time.

Pre-industrial history of today's settlement

Henau was first mentioned in 754 as Villa Aninauva in the so-called Henau document ; the place name means "Au des Anno". Henau is considered to be the origin of the community. In the document mentioned, neighboring villages were also mentioned for the first time, such as Wil SG or Wilen bei Wil (not clarified), Rickenbach , Züberwangen , Weieren or Dussnang . In the document mentioned, a red phalan bequeathed his possessions to the St. Gallen monastery . He wanted to make sure that his soul goes to heaven. At that time there was most likely already a church in Henau. There is evidence of a new building from around 800 and a document from 893.

Uzwil is first mentioned in 819 as Uzzinwilare , which means "courtyard of the Uzo". At that time, Uzzinwilare comprised the wide area from today's Niederuzwil to Oberuzwil.

Algetshausen was first mentioned in a document in 854. The earliest mention of Niederuzwil dates from 1277, that of Oberstetten from 1322 and Niederstetten from 1324. Ober- and Niederstetten were devastated by the Appenzell during the Appenzell Wars in 1403.

The current Henau Church was built around the 15th century. During the Reformation period, the Catholic pastors in Henau were no longer allowed to hold church services between 1527 and 1541 after the peasants resisted the tithe. Subsequently, both denominations were allowed to use the church until their own Reformed church in Niederuzwil was built in 1871. Nevertheless, several conflicts between the Catholics and Reformed are known, some of which became violent. In 1707 there was one death and two seriously injured people in disputes at a church festival. In 1709 the Protestant schoolmaster was killed, in return the Catholic pastor was arrested, the rectory was plundered and the Catholic schoolmaster was murdered. Two other men lost their lives. During the Toggenburg War in 1712, Henau was looted and burned.

Niederuzwil received village rights in 1556, Niederstetten in 1559 and Algetshausen in 1571.

The plague claimed many victims in 1611 and 1629. Due to bad harvests there was emigration, so it is known to emigrate to Pomerania in 1771 . Around 1820, after several bad harvests, part of the population died of hunger, while others emigrated to America.

When the Helvetic Republic was founded in 1798, the municipality of Henau was created. In 1803, with the founding of the canton of St. Gallen, today's political municipality of Henau was created, which included the almost uninhabited area of today's Uzwil. At that time, agriculture was almost the only source of income.

Industrialization and Modern History

The Niederuzwil industrialist Mathias Naef (1792–1846) opened a mechanical weaving mill in 1821, the Mathias Naef & Cie. This is considered to be the cornerstone for the industrialization of Uzwils.

On December 25, 1855, the railway line of the Sankt Gallisch-Appenzellische Eisenbahn Wil – Flawil with the station “Uzwil” was inaugurated. Originally a railway route from Schwarzenbach over the Bettenauerweiher and Oberuzwil to Flawil was planned. However, Matthias Naef was able to enforce his plans for a different route, so that the line now runs via Algetshausen and between Niederuzwil and Oberuzwil, thus boosting Niederuzwil's industry.

The newly built railway line and the hydropower of the river Uze moved the Benninger brothers to settle there in 1859. In 1860 Adolf Bühler sen. From the Hombrechtic industrial family Bühler von Benninger a piece of land and opened an iron foundry there. The Naefsche weaving mill, the railway line, as well as the industries of Benninger and Bühler caused a surge of residents in Uzwil.

The Bahnhofstrasse as a connection between the Uzwil train station and the Bad Buchenthal water treatment facility near Oberbüren, which existed from 1843 to 1907, was upgraded and restaurants and hotels were built to accommodate guests there, which « … not at all from Swiss, all of them from the area Buchenthal go, but were visited in sufficient numbers by foreigners from further afield »( Dr. Schildbach :). As the postcards show, the Bahnhofstrasse was also referred to as the Kaiserstrasse through visits by noblemen.

The three big Uzwil companies went different ways over the years. The Naefsche weaving mill still had around 1000 employees around the turn of the century, but was taken over by Peter Zweifel in 1914. The Peter Zweifel AG, Felsegg weaving mill was closed in 1971. In contrast, Benninger and Bühler are two global companies today.

Today's Catholic Church in Niederuzwil was founded in 1934 on the former company premises of Mathias Naef & Cie. erected after the Catholic parish office was able to buy the property from Peter Zweifel in 1932.

Names

Before the construction of the railway line, Uzwil did not exist. From 1850 to around 1880, only the station was initially referred to as Uzwil . It was the first mention of Uzwil , because previously only Niederuzwil and Oberuzwil were mentioned. Until now, the settlements were named after the hamlets Gupfen , Hub , Zahnershub or Vogelsberg .

Over the decades, Uzwil with its export-oriented machine industry has become a common place name. Finally, around 1880–1885, there was talk of a village called «Uzwil» for the first time. With the further expansion of the village of Uzwil, the community finally changed its name from Henau to Uzwil in 1962.
