Adolf Bühler senior

Adolf Bühler (born August 11, 1822 in Feldbach ZH ; † October 20, 1896 in Henau ; resident in Hombrechtikon ) was a Swiss entrepreneur from the Bühler family . He was the founder of the Adolf Bühler iron foundry , from which today's Bühler AG emerged .

Adolf Bühler comes from a wealthy family who owned a farm, a mill and a trot . Adolf Bühler was born in Feldbach in 1822 as the fifth of fifteen children of Hans Kaspar Bühler . In 1842 he started an apprenticeship in foundry at Caspar Aeppli in Rapperswil and at Sulzer in Winterthur . He went to the rolling abroad, among others, according to Graz , Trieste , Venice and Milan . In Graz he managed to become a master.

Adolf Bühlers planned to open his own foundry. Through the station manager of the Flawil station , he became aware of an area in the hamlet of Gupfen, from which the village of Uzwil later emerged, on the river Uze in the municipality of Henau. The location on the river for energy generation and the proximity to the Uzwil station of the Sankt Gallisch-Appenzell Railway , which opened in 1855, was ideal. In addition, the flourishing St. Gallen embroidery , so that was weaving Mathias Naef & Cie. based in Niederuzwil . He bought the site from the neighboring embroidery machine manufacturer, Gebrüder Benninger , with whom he had connections, and in 1859 moved to the community of Henau. On February 10, 1860, he opened his foundry with two employees. His first customer was Benninger.

In 1868 he married Maria Seline Naef, 22 years his junior, the granddaughter of Mathias Naef, the founder of Mathias Naef & Cie. She was the only daughter of Herisauer community Ammann Abraham Naef. The first child of the Protestant family was Adolf Bühler junior , the fourth of five boys was Friedrich Theodor Bühler. All five sons worked in the company.

Adolf's interest in mechanical engineering meant that Bühler not only cast rollers, but also built roller mills and entire mills itself over time . In 1875 he created a health insurance scheme for his employees, as well as welfare funds and residential buildings. In addition, together with Mathias Naef and the Benninger brothers, he financed the Protestant school in Niederuzwil, which was built in 1873.

Adolf senior died unexpectedly of cardiac paralysis in 1896. At that time, Adolf Bühler had 600 employees and 40 factory buildings, and branches were also set up in several countries.
