Mathias Naef

Mathias Naef (also Matthias Näf ; born May 14, 1792 in Schwarzenbach SG ; † December 29, 1846 in Niederuzwil ) was a Swiss weaving manufacturer, founder of Mathias Naef & Cie and St. Gallen Councilor .

Life

From 1814 Naef ran a weaving mill in Oberuzwil with his brothers , in 1824 he bought the “zum Schäfle” inn in Niederuzwil and founded a commercial building from which his company emerged. When he died in 1846, the weaving mill had around 2000 employees, some of them in the factories in Niederuzwil and Algetshausen, most of them working from home, mainly those from Untertoggenburg and Mörschwil .

He was a local councilor from 1830 to 1832 and from 1830 to 1834 the Grand Councilor of the Canton of St. Gallen. His son, Abraham Naef, was mayor of Henau, his daughter, Maria Seline Naef, married Adolf Bühler senior , the founder of today's Bühler AG .
