Commission des sciences et des arts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Commission des sciences et es arts was a group of experts that Napoleon Bonaparte set up on behalf of the board of directors with effect from March 16, 1798.

This commission consisted of 167 experts from all possible fields (scientists, artists, engineers, writers, etc.) and was supposed to accompany Napoleon on his Egyptian expedition . All but six traveled to Egypt and were then involved in the creation of the Description de l'Égypte .

Each of these professionals had a detailed assignment and was fairly free to carry out it. From an administrative point of view, this “commission” was more of a “corps” and was run as an integral part of the French invasion army.

Some of these scientists later became members of the Institut d'Égypte in Cairo .
