Pierre Joseph de Beauchamp (born June 28, 1752 in Vesoul , † November 18, 1801 in Nice ) was a French diplomat and astronomer .

Life

He was the son of the lawyer Xavier de Beauchamp. On September 7, 1798 he was appointed a member of the Institut d'Égypte . There he became a member of the Physics Section at the third meeting .

As a former consul in Muscat , he was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte with an arbitration procedure in the trading city of Muscat. When he left Alexandria on February 13, 1799 , his ship was captured by the English at sea . In the meantime the Ottoman Empire had declared war on France under pressure from the British fleet off Constantinople . De Beauchamp was imprisoned with the French embassy staff in Constantinople in the Castle of the Seven Towers .

Later released, he died shortly after arriving in France.

From 1785 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences .
