Ernest Coquebert de Montbret , full name Antoine François Ernest Coquebert de Montbret , (born January 31, 1780 in Hamburg , † April 7, 1801 in Cairo ) was a French botanist .

Life

Coquebert de Montbret was a son of the French diplomat in Hamburg Charles Coquebert de Montbret (1755-1831).

At his father's request, the board of directors appointed him to the Commission des sciences et des arts in March 1798 . As a member of this commission, Coquebert de Montbret accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte on his invasion of Egypt .

Coquebert de Montbret made some trips through Egypt , during which he examined the local flora. With effect from September 8, 1800 he was appointed librarian of the Institut d'Égypte in Cairo, but he gave this office back on February 20, 1801 in order to be able to devote himself more intensively to the Egyptian flora. Some of his plants scientifically described for the first time were included in the Description de l'Égypte .

Ernest Coquebert de Montbret died of the plague in Cairo at the age of 21 .

Honors

The plant genera of Crocosmia ( Montbretia DC. , Today synonym of Crocosmia . Planch ) and Montbretiopsis L.Bolus of the family Iridaceae (Iridaceae) were named after him. The genus Coquebertia Brongn. from the legume family (Fabaceae) honors all representatives of this family of natural scientists: the father Charles Étienne Coquebert de Montbret (1755–1831), his sons Antoine François Ernest Coquebert de Montbret, Eugène Barthélémy Coquebert de Montbret (1785–1847) and Anton Coquebert de Montbret (? -1825/1828) and the grandson Gustav Coquebert de Montbret (1805-1837).
