Jonschwil is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen , Switzerland .

geography

Historical aerial photo from 300 m by Walter Mittelholzer from 1919

Jonschwil consists of the villages Jonschwil and Schwarzenbach, the hamlet of Bettenau and part of Oberrindal . Jonschwil is located on the Thur near Wil SG and Oberuzwil .

The highest point at around 800  m above sea level. M. is the Wildberg, from which one has a good view of the Toggenburg , the Churfirsten and the Alpstein . The Bettenauer Weiher between Oberuzwil and Jonschwil is also ideal for excursions .

history

In 772 or 775 Bettenau was first mentioned as Betinauvia, 779 Schwarzenbach as Svarzinbah villa (later as Svarzanbach ), on May 20, 796 Jonschwil as Johannis vilare . In 814 a church dedicated to St. Martin is said to have existed in Jonschwil. The scholar and poet Notker Balbulus was probably born here around 840 .

Schwarzenbach Castle was built around 1200 . This was sold to Rudolf von Habsburg in 1273 , from 1483 to 1805 it belonged to the St. Gallen Monastery , and today it is privately owned. Around 1460, the Bettenauerweiher was created as an artificial pond between Bettenau and Oberuzwil in order to increase the fish population of the St. Gallen monastery.

In 1803 the villages merged to form the community of Jonschwil. In the 1880s, Oberrindal was politically and ecclesiastically divided into three parts, so that the village of Oberrindal today belongs partly to Oberuzwil , partly to Lütisburg and partly to Jonschwil. The separation runs along the streets.

Between 1893 and 1899 the writer Heinrich Federer was a Catholic priest and chaplain in Jonschwil.

Culture

Jonschwil had become a «concert village» in the 2000s with the venue near Degenau. For the first time, a first open air was held in 1996 at the foot of the Wildberg with the anniversary festival “1200 years of Jonschwil”. Then in 2003 the “Talentair” followed - a mixture of talent competition and open air. This event was under the patronage «SG2003»; the 200th anniversary year of St. Gallen.

In 2006 the OpenAir Tufertschwil took place here with groups such as Status Quo , Jamiroquai , Tokio Hotel and DJ Bobo . The second edition took place the following year.

Another edition took place in Jonschwil under the new name SummerDays Festival . With 16,000 visitors (8,000 per festival day) the festival was not sold out. There were: Gary Moore , Jethro Tull , The Hooters , Florian Ast , Bootleg Beatles on Friday and Nena , Polo Hofer & the Butter Band , Sunrise Avenue , Plüsch, Bagatello , Starch, Frantic and the Tiger Ensemble from St. Pauli on Saturday.

After the festival, the new organizers took stock and decided not to hold a festival in 2008. Since 2009 the event has been taking place in Arbon directly on Lake Constance.

In August 2008, the US band Metallica played the only concert on the Summer Vacation Tour on Swiss soil in front of 35,000 spectators . Mnemic from Denmark and Within Temptation from the Netherlands played as opening acts . A curious consequence of this concert was that "Nothing else matters" from 1992 rose again to number 10 in the Swiss single charts.

After an appearance by the Toten Hosen in 2009, the Sonisphere Festival took place in 2010 with 45,000 visitors. With Metallica , Megadeth , Slayer and Anthrax , four bands that shaped the style of Thrash Metal were on stage. After heavy rains, which led to chaotic conditions during the festival, no more open-air festivals were held.
