Urs Paul Engeler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Urs Paul Engeler (born April 9, 1950 in Niederuzwil ; resident in Ettenhausen and Guntershausen ) is a Swiss journalist . Until May 2013 he was the Federal Palace editor for the magazine Die Weltwoche .

Life

The son of a bank employee grew up in Ettenhausen, where he also attended primary school. He graduated from the Einsiedeln Abbey School , which he graduated with a type A Matura . From the 1970/71 winter semester he studied the history of the German language and literature , Swiss history and philosophy at the University of Zurich . In January 1976 he obtained his licentiate , in June 1977 he passed the examination for the higher teaching post. He initially worked as a German and philosophy teacher at the grammar school in Schaffhausen until 1979 . In 1980 he did his doctorate under Harald Burger with a thesis on the linguistic investigation of ironic speech.

Engeler is widowed and has two grown sons. He lives in Bern.

journalism

In the spring of 1980, Engeler got into journalism as a regional editor for the Winterthur newspaper Der Landbote . He later worked for the Basler and Berner Zeitung , then in 1987 for Weltwoche under Fredy Gsteiger , then switched to the Sunday newspaper and the former weekly magazine Facts . In the 1990s, Engeler was the editor of the business newspaper Cash . After Roger Köppel became editor-in-chief in 2001, Engeler returned to Weltwoche at his invitation .

Engeler operates an investigative journalism that gradually earned him the reputation of a “journalist with the flair of a criminalist”, which, however, also repeatedly led to controversy. For the first time, his work triggered a great response through an article on the secret organization P-26 published in connection with the fishing scandal . In 2004 he had to answer to a military tribunal after exposing the Bern government council bunker. The Onyx wiretapping system and the state security are also criticized. In 2006, Engeler was charged with allegedly violating the current racism penal code in a publication entitled “Hunters, Robbers, Rätoromanen. The cheekiest minority in Switzerland », whereupon he was acquitted.

An article published by Engeler in the run-up to the Federal Council elections in 2011 about the SVP Federal Council candidate Bruno Zuppiger prompted the latter to withdraw his candidacy and moved Engeler towards investigative journalism .

Engeler resigned from his position as editor at Weltwoche at the end of May 2013 and retired. In a reduced workload he continues to write as an author for Weltwoche .

criticism

At the beginning of 2012 Engeler accused Philipp Hildebrand , President of the Board of Directors of the Swiss National Bank , of insider trading in an article in Weltwoche . This developed into the Hildebrand affair , as a result Hildebrand resigned as president. More articles on the topic followed.

Other media representatives and the industry magazine Schweizer Journalist criticized or rated some of the coverage of Weltwoche as negative because of several errors in the content, the rude writing style, the refusal to admit false statements, the uncertain sources and evidence, the overly harsh accusations and the violation of privacy . The Swiss press council reprimanded the reporting for violations of the obligation to truth and correction as well as the violation of the obligation to be heard in serious allegations. Furthermore, the press council reprimanded the scandalous choice of words, which were hardly supported by facts. In addition, the choice of words suggests that there was a lack of the necessary distance between Weltwoche and the source of the information.

Awards

In December 2011, Urs Paul Engeler won an internet vote by the industry magazine Schweizer Journalist and was named “Best Political Journalist 2011” and “Journalist of the Year 2011”.
