Bruno Zuppiger (born February 24, 1952 in St. Gallen ; † February 19, 2016 in Hinwil ; resident in Hinwil and Rapperswil-Jona / formerly Jona SG ) was a Swiss politician ( SVP ). From 1999 until his resignation on September 10, 2012, he was a member of the National Council .

education and profession

After graduating from high school from 1972 to 1976, Zuppiger studied at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and at the teachers' seminar in Zurich. From 1971 to 1972 he worked as a teacher in Goldingen (SG) and from 1976 to 1982 in Hinwil (ZH). From 1982 to 1995 he was secretary and later director of the Cantonal Trade Association of Zurich .

From 1995 he worked with Zuppiger & Partner AG as President and Delegate of the Board of Directors in the field of business and management consulting. From 2000 to 2008 he was managing director of the Swiss Kitchen Association (KVS). From 2002 to 2010 he was president of the brand organization Swiss Label , in 2004 he became president of the Swiss-Baltic Chamber of Commerce . From 2006 to 2013 he was managing director of Albis Immobilien + Verwaltung GmbH in Zurich. From 2010 to 2011 Zuppiger was President of the Swiss Trade Association (sgv).

Since 2011 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Swiss China Management Group AG , and since 2012 President of the management service provider EN Management AG . From 2012 to 2013 he was president of the Engelberg Industrial Group (EIG) AG , then as its managing director. From 2004 to 2012 he was a member of the board of directors at Planzer Holding AG in Dietikon and at PGMM Schweiz AG in Winterthur, most recently as Vice President. From 1976 to 2012 he was a member of the board of directors at Beck Keller AG in Regensdorf. From 2005 to 2013 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Albis Invest AG in Zurich and from 2007 to 2013 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pontifical Swiss Guard ( Pontificia Cohors Helvetica ), from 2005 to 2010 of the Continua - Foundation for the Maintenance of Pension Protection in Zurich.

After journalist Urs Paul Engeler accused Zuppiger of irregularities in the management of the inheritance of a former employee in an article in Weltwoche in December 2011, the public prosecutor of the canton of Zurich opened criminal proceedings against Zuppiger on January 6, 2012. On October 1, 2012, the public prosecutor brought charges against him and one of his former employees, alleging that they embezzled a total of around 240,000 francs and used them, among other things, to pay bills for their own company. As part of an abbreviated procedure , the accused recognized this accusation and agreed with the public prosecutor on conditional imprisonment of 13 months each with a trial period of two years and a fine of 1500 francs each. On January 16, 2013, the Zurich District Court sentenced the accused to these sanctions.

politics

Zuppiger began his political career as a church councilor , at that time still with the CVP . In 1976 he joined the SVP. From 1982 to 1990 he was a local councilor in Hinwil. From 1988 to 1994 he was president of the SVP district of Hinwil, from 1993 he was a member of the board of the SVP in the canton of Zurich .

From 1991 to 1999 Zuppiger represented the SVP in the Zurich Cantonal Council . He was a member and president of various commissions such as the Finance Commission (1995–1999). In 1999 he was President of the Economy and Taxes Commission.

In the parliamentary elections in 1999 he was elected to the National Council, where he was a member of the Finance Commission (President of the FDEA sub-commission) and from 2003 a member of the finance delegation of the Federal Councils, its President in 2005 and 2009. From 2003 to 2007 he was also a member of the Commission for Economy and Taxes, and from 2007 he was a member of the National Council's Security Policy Commission (2008–2009 President). Zuppiger has always been an advocate of a strong Swiss army . Based on the army report from autumn 2010, he took part in a civil alliance, together with Bruno Frick (CVP / SZ), Colonel and President of the SiK Council of States and Pius Segmüller, the former commander of the papal guard.

In the run-up to the 2011 Federal Council elections , Zuppiger was nominated as a candidate by the SVP parliamentary group together with Jean-François Rime . After Weltwoche raised the above-mentioned allegations in the inheritance matter, Zuppiger withdrew his candidacy. In his place, the President of the Swiss Farmers' Association , Hansjörg Walter, was nominated as a candidate for the SVP's Federal Council. As a result, Zuppiger resigned as President of the Swiss Trade Association (sgv). On September 10, 2012, Zuppiger announced his immediate resignation from the National Council as a result of the inheritance affair. Gregor A. Rutz took over for him .

Private

Zuppiger was married in his second marriage and had five children, three of them from his first marriage in which he was widowed. He lived in Hinwil in the canton of Zurich . Zuppiger was a colonel in the Swiss Army and from 1997 to 2001 commander of the 91st Rescue Regiment.

He died of sudden heart failure shortly before his 64th birthday .
