Pius Segmüller (born March 8, 1952 in St. Gallen ) was the 32nd commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard from 1998 to 2002 . From 2007 to 2011 he sat in the National Council for the CVP .

Life

Segmüller grew up in Emmen near Lucerne and attended St. Klemens high school in Ebikon . He completed his Matura at the Lucerne Cantonal School . The secondary school teacher trained in Zurich first worked as a teacher in the canton of Uri , then became an instruction officer for the rescue forces in the VBS military department, congress manager at the pharmaceutical company Sandoz (now Novartis ), deputy head of the Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief of the canton of Bern and finally a police officer for the St. Gallen. For his great help in the rockslide in Randa in 1991 , he received honorary citizenship from the Valais community .

In the Swiss Guard , Segmüller was appointed as his successor after the death of the previous commandant Alois Estermann . He set up an information and recruiting office in Switzerland, appointed a media officer and intensified the training and further education of the guardsmen. The stricter selection process as well as the intensification of cadre training - for example by a consulted instructor from the Swiss Army - are among the most important innovations of Segmüller. In 2002 he resigned for family reasons and was replaced by Elmar Mäder . Then Segmüller was commander of the Lucerne City Police until 2006 . Segmüller is also a safety advisor to the World Football Association .

In the 2007 elections he was elected to the National Council for the Christian Democratic People's Party of the Canton of Lucerne . In 2011 he then missed re-election.

In 2009 Pius Segmüller founded Swissec AG, of which he was the owner and managing director until 2012. He then received a mandate from the DDPS to set up the ombudsman for the Swiss Army. On July 1, 2012, he was appointed chief shooting and off-duty activities (SAT) in the Swiss Army.

Segmüller has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the 1792 Foundation since 2006 , which promotes and maintains the friendly relationship between France and Switzerland.

Segmüller lives in Lucerne, is married and has two children.
