The commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard , officially in Latin Praefecti Pontificalis Custodiae Helveticae , is in charge of the overall leadership of the Pontifical Guard . In particular, he is responsible for the recruitment and compliance with the guard rules and the directives of the superiors. Furthermore, he is responsible for the good development of the corps and the maintenance of discipline. The commander also represents the guard externally. The Vice-Commander of the Swiss Guard and the chaplain of the Swiss Guard report to him .

The Swiss Guard is mainly responsible for the protection of the entrances to the Vatican City and the Apostolic Palace as well as for the protection of the Holy Father , both in the Vatican City and during his trips abroad. Therefore, the commandant is at public appearances of the Holy Father, z. B. at general audiences on St. Peter's Square , often seen in the immediate vicinity of the Pope.
