Life

Kaspar von Silenen was the son of Albin von Silenen and thus nephew of Bishop Jost von Silenen .

In 1505, Pope Julius II applied to the Diet , the meeting of envoys from the Swiss Confederation , for a contingent of Swiss travelers to protect the Vatican. The Swiss cleric Buonaser Peter von Hertenstein acted as intermediary and Jakob and Ulrich Fugger from Augsburg paid the first 150 guardsmen.

On January 22nd, 1506, Captain Kaspar von Silenen moved into Rome with Peter von Hertenstein and 150 rice walkers and they received the Pope's blessing . The day is considered the day the first Pontifical Swiss Guard was founded. Their task was to serve the Pope as body and palace guard .
