Peter von Hertenstein was born as the son of Kaspar von Hertenstein at Buonas Castle on Lake Zug . He was the brother of Jakob von Hertenstein and related to Jost von Silenen , Bishop of Sitten and Grenoble . In 1476 Peter von Hertenstein studied at the University of Basel. In 1482 he was in Paris Magister Artium and in 1489 familiaris of the later Pope Julius II. On the side he was also canon in Beromünster (1483), canon of Sitten (1489), canon of Basel (1494-1518) and 1494 dean of Valeria .

In 1498 he ran unsuccessfully in the election of the candidate of the French party for the bishopric in Sion, whereupon he became canon of Constance in 1502 . He was ordained a priest in 1504, from 1505 he was papal chamberlain, from 1509 to 1515 dean of the Basel cathedral chapter.

On January 22nd, 1506, he handed over 150 Swiss Guardsmen, whom he had led to Rome, to Pope Julius II. After his efforts for the Swiss Guard, Hertenstein moved back to his homeland in April 1506. Since he was still canon of Konstanz, he went a few years later to where he also died. He was a typical representative of a nobleman who was destined for a clerical career with house power, which helped him to accumulate a corresponding benefice .
