Elmar Theodor Mäder (born July 28, 1963 in Henau , Canton St. Gallen , Switzerland ) was the 33rd commandant of the Swiss Guard from 2002 to 2008 .

Life

He grew up in Zuzwil SG with three brothers and a sister. His parents, Theo and Katharina Mäder, ran a business for sausage casings and butcher's supplies there. After primary school in Zuzwil and secondary school in Wil SG , he attended the canton school in St. Gallen and then studied at the University of St. Gallen and the University of Freiburg i.Ue. Jurisprudence. In 1990 he graduated with a degree in both rights. He then worked as an associate clerk at the district court in Wil / SG and, from 1992, an independent trustee specializing in tax advice, auditing and consolidation of finance companies.

Elmar Mäder is married to Theresia Blöchliger. The couple has four children. He is a member of the GV Abbatia Wilensis (Wil), the AKV Alemannia (Freiburg), the AV Bodania (St. Gallen) as well as the Helvetia Romana in the Swiss student association and the KAV Capitolina Rome in the CV .

In spring 2009 he joined the Hamburg-based Prevent AG as head of the Swiss office in Zurich. Since summer 2011 he has been managing director of Medical Vision AG in Roggwil, Thurgau.

Military and Swiss Guard

In the Swiss Army, he held the rank of first lieutenant in the anti-aircraft troops . Elmar Mäder joined the Vatican in 1998. On 2 June 1998 it appointed Pope John Paul II. Vice-Commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, which he eventually from late 2002 to August 2008 as commander board.

Pope Benedict XVI expressed his solidarity with the Swiss Guard and its commander . also with the fact that he baptized Commandant Mäder's fourth child, together with thirteen other children, on January 7, 2007, on the feast of the baptism of the Lord , in the Sistine Chapel .

On March 6, 2008, Mäder announced that he wanted to start something new in Switzerland.
