Daniel Anrig
Daniel Rudolf Anrig (born July 10, 1972 in Walenstadt ; legal resident in Sargans ) is a Swiss administrative officer. Until January 31, 2015 he was the 34th commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard .
Life
Anrig is the youngest son of the married couple Rudolf Gustav Anrig from Sargans and Silvia Maria geb. Benz from Marbach SG . He has two siblings. Sargans has been the family's place of residence and citizenship since the 16th century. Daniel Anrig attended elementary and cantonal school there and graduated with the Matura. He served as a halberdier in the Papal Swiss Guard from 1992 to 1994 . He then studied law ( civil and canon law ) at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland . In 1999 he completed his studies with a degree in civil and canon law.
In 2002 he became head of the criminal police in the canton of Glarus . In 2003, Anrig was jointly responsible for a controversial raid by the Glarus canton police into human and drug trafficking in a home for asylum seekers. The investigations into disproportionate actions by the police, which followed a complaint from Amnesty International , were closed by the investigating judge because he saw no criminal conduct. However, Anrig had to bear part of the procedural costs. In March 2006 he was promoted to commandant of the canton police .
Anrig has the rank of captain in the Swiss Army .
Pope Benedict XVI appointed Anrig on August 19, 2008 as the 34th commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard . He took office with the rank of colonel on December 1, 2008. As an honor, Johann Schmidberger made his own armor and helmet with his family coat of arms next to the papal coat of arms for him in 2009 .
The period between 2012 and 2014 was increasingly overshadowed by internal quarrels. For example, the head of the Vatican police, Domenico Giani, and not Anrig, was honored by the international Catholic association “Tu es petrus” in 2012 for his services to the safety of the Pope. In the tribute, Giani was referred to as the “Guardian Angel of the Pope”. On December 2, 2014, Anrig was unexpectedly dismissed, which was discussed in numerous media. He ruled with a hard hand and lived in a luxury apartment. His military style irritated Pope Francis. The Pope and ex-guardsmen denied this. Anrig has been the head of the staff department, the smallest of the four departments, of the airport police at the Zurich cantonal police since July 2015 . This position was questioned critically in some cases.
Since January 1, 2020, Anrig has been in charge of public administration in Zermatt as the municipality clerk.
Anrig was married to the theologian Bernadett Rita b. Bejczy and has four children. He is a member of the Catholic student association AKV Alemannia Freiburg im Üechtland in the Swiss student association .
