The Cantonal School Sargans (KSS) is a middle school in the Canton of St. Gallen and is located in the municipality of Sargans . It was opened in 1963 and has been expanded and renovated twice so far. Around 700 pupils are currently attending the grammar school, the business school, the specialist secondary school and, since 2017, the computer science secondary school. The Interstate Matura School for Adults (ISME) is also offered. The Sargans Cantonal School is the only secondary school in the canton that offers all courses.
Until the canton school could be opened in 1963, the Sarganserland valley community had to fight for the construction. In an initial survey about the construction of the canton school, this was rejected. In a second survey, the construction was just approved, but the Sargans canton school was only defined as a branch school . That is why the school had been pejoratively referred to as a “hybrid school”, “rump school”, “dwarf school” or “experimental school”. In 1969 and 1992 the building was expanded. In 2003 the school celebrated its 40th anniversary. A regional educational and cultural center has grown out of the former “dwarf school”.
In 2006 the school received the first school prize in the Science Olympiad on Swiss Science Olympiad Day .
In 2013, to celebrate the school's fiftieth anniversary, the CantiChor, founded in 1992, performed Mozart 's Coronation Mass and the cantata In Sand composed especially for the occasion by Jürg Hanselmann .
