The canton school Wattwil (colloquially: Kanti Wattwil ) is a middle school in the canton of St. Gallen in Wattwil in Toggenburg with around 750 students. In addition to the grammar school, there is also a technical secondary school (FMS). The Wattwil Cantonal School is the second largest secondary school in St. Gallen after the Cantonal School at Burggraben in St. Gallen.
history
The new building of the canton school Wattwil started in 1968 and opened on April 20, 1970 with seven classes and 30 teachers as the second middle school in the canton of St. Gallen. The building facades were designed from exposed concrete by the architects Otto Glaus and Heribert Stadlin .
The school was already struggling with space problems in 1974 when the number of students had risen from 154 to over 500. This could be remedied by renting rooms in other school buildings. A desired extension was not built.
In 1992, the new cafeteria planned by Heribert Stadlin began operations as a separate building.
Refurbishment / new construction
In the foreseeable period (April 2009) one is restoration of the main building of the district school Wattwil. Since there is also a need for places to stay and work, a supplementary wing is to be built.
In its investment program, the St. Gallen government postponed the overall renovation of the Wattwil canton school for years. Politicians from the Linth area then demanded an arrangement with possible other locations such as in Rapperswil or Uznach. As the government announced, it is sticking to the Wattwil site; A way to school from the Linth area to Wattwil is reasonable for the students.

The canton school has a gym, a cafeteria, an entrance hall and a media library in which you can do your homework comfortably and quietly and an auditorium in which concerts and other events take place on a regular basis.
Catchment area
Although the school is located in the middle of Toggenburg, around two thirds of the students come from the other side of the Rickens , the constituency See-Gaster , which is due to the geographic location of the canton of St. Gallen. Most students use the Pre-Alpine Express order from Rapperswil station to station Wattwil to arrive. That is why the school is run as a day school and has a cafeteria .
School fees
Schoolchildren whose parents have their tax residence in the canton of St. Gallen do not pay school fees . For the rest, the school fee is CHF 17,000 per school year . The entrance examination fee is 200 francs once.

Business middle school
A business school was offered in Wattwil until summer 2012, which is only offered at other locations due to the austerity measures taken by the canton of St. Gallen. In contrast to the grammar school, an elementary school degree and a successfully passed entrance examination were required for the business school (WMS) .
Technical middle school
Another educational offer is the Fachmittelschule (FMS). Prerequisites are a primary school diploma and a successfully passed entrance exam in the 3rd secondary level.
music
Music is intensively promoted at the Wattwil Cantonal School. The orchestra il mosaico is one of the leading Swiss youth orchestras. The school has a big band ( Big Band Kanti Wattwil ), a choir ( cantacanti ) and teachers for individual instrumental lessons .
The big band of the Wattwil Cantonal School was named the best Swiss youth big band by the city of Dietikon in 2009 . She won this title again two years later.
