Roland Buchs

Roland Buchs (born May 12, 1940 in Düdingen , Canton of Friborg ) was the 30th and 32nd commandant of the Swiss Guard .

Life

After graduating from high school, Buchs completed an apprenticeship as a banking specialist. On June 1, 1976 he entered the Pontifical Swiss Guard with the rank of major . On November 25, 1982 he was appointed commander of the Swiss Guard by Pope John Paul II and promoted to colonel . Buchs held the post of commander until November 29, 1997. His successor was Alois Estermann . When he was killed on May 4, 1998, a few hours after being appointed 31st Commander of the Swiss Guard, together with his wife by NCO Cédric Tornay , Buchs was reinstated and exercised as 32nd Commander on May 6, 1998 until August 16, 1998. He then became head of the Protection Organization section of the Federal Security Service in Bern. He retired on May 31, 2005.

Buchs is married and has five children.
