Christian Rutishauser (born December 3, 1965 in Niederuzwil / Canton of St. Gallen ) is a Swiss Jesuit and Judaist , involved in Christian-Jewish dialogue . Since July 31, 2012 he has been acting provincial superior .

biography

Christian Rutishauser grew up in the Heiligkreuz district in St. Gallen . He completed the schools at the secondary school in Flade and at the Cantonal School of St. Gallen , where he graduated with a Latin Matura. He then studied theology at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) from 1985 to 1991 , with a free semester at the Institut Catholique in Lyon . During his studies he worked for a year in the parish of Wil SG . After graduating with a licentiate and a pastoral year in Engelburg , Diocese of St. Gallen , he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Innsbruck in 1992 . During this time he continued his spiritual education at the Center Manrèse in Clamart (Paris) and worked as a German teacher in Kolín (Czech Republic).

From 1994 he was an employee and student chaplain at the university community and the Akademikerhaus Bern, which he also headed from 1996 to 1998. In the 1990s he was also the director of study trips to Israel / Palestine lasting several weeks.

In 1998 he was delivered today Cardinal Kurt Koch to ordained priest and began his doctoral work with a research study of Jewish philosophy and Rabbinic Judaism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Pontifical University of Ratisbonne in Jerusalem .

From 1999 further studies followed at the University of Lucerne , a two-month research stay at the Yeshiva University in New York and a four-month substitute for the scientific assistant at the Jewish-Christian Institute of the University of Lucerne. In 2002 he completed his doctorate at the Theological Faculty of the University of Lucerne in the Jewish Studies department with the dissertation “Halachic Existence.” Submitted to Clemens Thoma . 2001–2007 Christian Rutishauser was head of education and 2007–2009 director in the Lassalle-Haus with a focus on Christian spirituality , Judeo-Christian conversation and interreligious dialogue . He leads numerous retreats and contemplation courses and is a speaker on spirituality .

Since 2002, he leads teaching for Jewish Studies at the University of Philosophy in Munich . Further teaching assignments followed at the Cardinal Bea Center of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at the Theological Faculty of the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . Since 2004 he has been a member of the Jewish / Roman Catholic Discussion Commission of the Swiss Bishops 'Conference and since 2012 a member of the Ecumenical Commission II of the German Bishops' Conference . Since 2004 he has been a delegation member of the Vatican Secretariat for Religious Relations with Judaism at the regular meetings of the Interreligious Liaison Committee ( ILC ).

In 2006/2007 the Jesuit internal tertiary and further education year took place in Boston and New York , USA.

In 2011 he carried out the pilgrimage project “On foot to Jerusalem , spiritual - interreligious - peace policy” with a small group and made a pilgrimage from Switzerland to the “Holy City” in seven months. The pilgrimage route led across the Balkans and Turkey. The outbreak of civil war in Syria made it difficult to cross the country, but it did not make it impossible. Once in Jerusalem, the group visited religious sites and held a peace conference.

In February 2012 he was appointed Provincial of the Swiss Jesuit Province by the Superior General of the Society of Jesus Adolfo Nicolás . He has held this position since July 31, 2012 after his predecessor Pierre Emonet .

Since 2014 he has been a permanent advisor to the Pope on religious relations with Judaism .

He supports the corporate responsibility initiative .
