Franz Mali (born December 28, 1960 in Oberzeiring , Styria ) is an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and theologian . He is university professor for Greek Patristicism , History of the Ancient Church and Languages ​​of the Christian Orient at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the bilingual University of Freiburg ( French Université de Friborg , Latin Universitas Friburgensis ) in Freiburg im Üechtland ( French Friborg [ fʀibuʀ ]) in Switzerland .

Life

Origin and education

Franz Mali grew up as one of six children of a Catholic family in Oberzeiring, Upper Styria . His father, who died in 1989, was a factory worker and previously a woodworker . His mother, who died in 2014, was a housewife and farmer . One brother died in 2003.

Mali attended elementary school in his hometown. He then graduated from the Episcopal Gymnasium in Graz and then studied Roman Catholic theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Graz . He completed this study in 1984 with the graduation to the Master of Divinity from. Professional work as a scientist

On August 1, 1999, he was appointed Associate University Professor to the Chair of Greek Patristicism, History of the Ancient Church and Languages ​​of the Christian Orient at the bilingual Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Freiburg (Université de Friborg), the sixth largest and only bilingual university in the Switzerland, and was its dean from August 1, 2012 to January 31, 2015 . He has been Vice Rector of the University of Freiburg since 2018.

The Chair for Patristics and History of the Old Church at the University of Freiburg is part of the Department of Patristics and Church History and the Institute for Antiquity and Byzantium . The chair holder is Franz Mali. In research and teaching, he represents the field of ancient church history , the history of theology and the history of literature of the ancient church as well as the ancient oriental churches . The chair also includes a teaching and research council for patristics and the history of dogma .

The Institute for Languages ​​of the Biblical World and the Christian Orient has been attached to the chair since 1970 . This institute has set itself the goal of enabling and promoting the learning of ancient and medieval languages ​​that are necessary and useful for understanding the Bible and developing important literary sources in church history . Due to the ecumenical relevance , the interreligious and interdenominational perspective, the institute also wants to support institutions that are concerned with cultures, religions and churches of the East, especially in linguistic and exegetical questions, and to be available for advice. The tasks of the institute also include supporting the Swiss Patristic Working Group.

Franz Mali is a member of several boards , including the board of the Study Center for Faith and Society at the Institute for Ecumenical Studies at the University of Freiburg (Friborg), the board of the Institute for Antiquity and Byzantium , an institute in the Philosophical Faculty, the board of the Dominique Barthélemy Institute and the Board of Trustees of the Spicilegium Friburgense .

Pilgrimage to Israel

Franz Mali made a pilgrimage from Ascension Day to Christmas 2011 together with Christian M. Rutishauser SJ , then head of the Lassalle-Haus , a center for interreligious encounters with a focus on spirituality , dialogue and responsibility , in Bad Schönbrunn in Switzerland, Esther Rüthemann and Hildegard Aepli Starting from the Lassalle House, on foot via Italy , Austria, Slovenia , Croatia , Serbia , Bulgaria , Turkey , Syria and Jordan to Israel .

As the leader of the pilgrim group, he planned the entire route meticulously and guided the group safely with GPS support. The four pilgrims encountered the history of the Crusaders , Christian Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire . In the Balkans they saw the traces of the Balkan wars , in Syria they came into contact with the civil war . The Israeli-Palestinian separation wall also had to be passed. The dialogue between the religions was central to them: at a peace conference in Jerusalem it was discussed how pilgrims and the places of pilgrimage in the Holy Land contribute to understanding. The pilgrimage could also be accompanied in a blog . The group celebrated the conclusion of this approximately seven-month pilgrimage of over 4,000 kilometers on foot in Jerusalem and Bethlehem at Christmas .

Franz Mali's travel experiences were the subject of many of his lectures in Austria, Germany and Switzerland after his return. Since Holy Week 2015 is under the title Four Pilgrims - One Destination. A new book, written by the four pilgrims about their pilgrimage together, is available on foot after Jerusalem .
