Nerses of Lambron
Nerses of Lambron ( Armenian Ներսես Լամբրոնացի ; Nerses Lambronatsi) (* 1153 at Lambron Castle ( Armenia ); † July 17, 1198 in Tarsus (Turkey) ) was Archbishop of Tarsus in the Kingdom of Lesser Armenia and one of the greatest figures in Armenian literature and of the Armenian Apostolic Church .
Life
Nerses of Lambron comes from the Hethumid family . He was a son of Oshin II (1125-1170) and the Shahanducht, who comes from the Pahlavuni family and is a descendant of Gregory the Illuminator . His great uncle was Catholicos Nerses IV. Schnorhali . Nerses was ordained a priest by him in 1169. In 1176 he was ordained bishop by the new Catholicos Gregory IV Tgha.
At the Synod of Hromkla in 1179 he gave a synodal speech that has become famous and testifies to the great efforts of the Middle Ages for the unity of the Church. This speech is considered a masterpiece of eloquence and style; it shows freshness and vitality, theological and ecumenical vision and enthusiasm for the unity of the church.
In 1180/81 he was entrusted with responsibility for the diocese of Tarsus. As a promoter of ecumenism, Prince (and later King) Levon slandered him as a traitor to the true faith and traditions of the Armenian Church, because of his openness to other churches and his passion for unity. However, Lewon puts his trust in him and sends him to Constantinople to resume negotiations with a view to reuniting the churches.
