The Swiss Church Newspaper was founded by Melchior Schlumpf and first appeared on June 30, 1832 in Lucerne .

She placed herself at the service of the autonomy of the Catholic Church , as it was represented by the conservative clergy against the interventions of the liberal regeneration government. In September 1835, Schlumpf lost his professorship at the college and had to leave the canton of Lucerne .

Since April of the same year the general church newspaper for Germany and Switzerland , which has been moved from Munich to Switzerland , has appeared in Lucerne to represent the liberal direction within the Catholic clergy. This sheet was produced by various printing houses: first by Joseph Leonz Hunkeler's report house printing house , then by Xaver Meyer, and finally by Joseph Huwyler.

With the discontinuation of the Allgemeine Kirchenzeitung at the end of 1838, the Schweizerische Kirchenzeitung lost its competition. It appeared in the Räber printing works in Lucerne until the Sonderbund War (with a brief interruption in 1838/39 when Thuringia was printing it).

It was not until November 1848 that the paper was re-issued under the name of the Church Newspaper for Catholic Switzerland in Solothurn . Since 1855 under the old name again, it was published in Solothurn until 1899, and again in the Räber printing house in Lucerne since 1900. Today the Swiss Church Newspaper is published by NZZ Fachmedien AG in Zurich. She has a WEMF - certified circulation of 1,642 (previous year: 1,760.) Sold or 1,698 (previous year: 1,760.) Distributed copies.
