Mathias Eggenberger
Mathias Eggenberger (baptized Matheus; born March 17, 1905 in Grabs , Canton St. Gallen ; † October 6, 1975 in Goldach SG ) was a Swiss National Councilor , Council of States and Government Councilor of the Canton of St. Gallen .
Life and work
Initially, the later Magistrate Mathias Eggenberger worked as a primary school teacher in Niederuzwil SG. There he married Wilhelmina Näf on August 6, 1930. The marriage resulted in five children, among them Margrith Bigler-Eggenberger, who was elected Switzerland's first ordinary federal judge in 1974 .
The former mountain farmer's son joined the Social Democratic Party early on, and he consistently represented its concerns at all levels throughout his life. Soon he was elected mayor of Henau-Uzwil SG, and from 1951 to 1969 he was a member of the governing body of what was then the Justice and Police Department.
In his life and work, Eggenberger consistently represented a religious-social ethic. He dealt specifically with the social effects of the addiction problem of alcoholism .
He also worked as a cantonal judge and as a member of the church council of the Evangelical Reformed Church in the canton of St. Gallen .

From 1934 to 1952 Eggenberger was a member of the Cantonal Council, and in 1948/49 as its President. From 1947 to 1971 he was a member of the National Council, which he chaired in 1969/70, and from 1971 until his death in 1975 he was a member of the Council of States.
