Building history

The church of St. Pankratius was first mentioned in 1229 as a branch church of the Rüti monastery . It was first mentioned in a document - presumably dated back to 1229 - in which Rudolf I of Rapperswil assigned the church to the Rüti monastery. Citizens of Rapperswil are mentioned as witnesses, which means that the document is the first mention of the city's founding around 1200. In 1260 a pastor is mentioned in Bollingen.

In 1519 the new church, which still exists today, was consecrated. The church fee and thus the pastoral care went to the Rapperswil Hospital in 1537 ; it was not until 1827 that a pastor took up residence in Bollingen. The core of today's church dates from the 16th century, but was changed to Baroque style in the 18th century . After only one roof turret had existed before, the distinctive Käsbissen tower with sacristy was added to the south of the polygonal choir of the single-nave hall church in 1764 . The steep gable roof is slightly set off above the choir; The nave and choir have interlocking ashlar corners. The parish church owes its current appearance to the overall restoration in 1988.

Architecture and equipment

The choir arch crucifix is a work of art from 1570. The baroque high altar with a painting of the Lamentation of Christ by Johann Michael Hunger was created around 1690 and was originally in the parish church of Rapperswil . The 14 paintings of the Stations of the Cross , painted in oil on canvas, date from 1764.

When the nave was raised and lengthened in 1775/76, a vaulted ceiling was created under the new roof structure . The Gothic choir, which is closed on three sides, is joined by the baroque nave with its three pointed arched window pairs. Inside, a pointed choir arch made of stone separates the nave from the choir with a bony vault. The redesign of the interior in 1776/1777 included furnishing the vault with stucco work in the Rococo style by Martin Zobel. The stucco cartouches frame late baroque ceiling frescos by Felix Christoph Cajetan Fuchs. The paintings show saints and in the central ceiling painting an allegory of the mystical veneration of the Heart of Jesus . The crucifix can be dated around 1770/80. A Biedermeier statue of the patron saint, St. Pankratius , added to the interior decoration around 1844. In 1874 there was another redesign in line with historicism , but the ceiling paintings were exposed again in 1936. More recent are the colored glass windows by August Wanner in the choir and the gallery with organ from the 1950s. On the occasion of the total renovation in 1988, the church received an altarpiece from the former Rapperswil hospital, and the rococo stucco was reconstructed.
