Gähwil (745 m) is a village in the Swiss municipality of Kirchberg in the canton of St. Gallen . 975 people live in Gähwil (as of December 31, 2005).
geography
The clustered village is located on the southern slope below the St. Iddaburg on the border with Hinterthurgau .
history
The village was first mentioned in 1209 as Gainwil . The Alt-Toggenburg Castle , the first seat of the Counts of Toggenburg, was located on the site of St. Iddaburg . From the 13th century on, Gähwil was owned by the monasteries of Magdenau and St. Gallen . The jurisdiction was in the hands of the Counts of Toggenburg. In 1468 it went to the prince abbey of St. Gallen , which Gähwil later assigned to the court of Bazenheid .
In 1404 a chapel is mentioned as a branch of the Kirchberg parish . After the Reformation , the population of Gähwil almost completely returned to the Catholic faith. From 1755 Gähwil had its own parish church consecrated to the Holy Trinity , in 1764 it was separated from the Kirchberg parish.

When the canton of St. Gallen was founded in 1803, Gähwil was assigned to the political municipality of Kirchberg. In 1789 the Gähwil Free School opened . The first school house in the village is mentioned in 1807, and a new building followed in 1841. In 1904 the village corporation was founded .

Gähwil is located on the Kirchberg – Mühlrüti road and is served by BUS Ostschweiz with a half- hourly connection to Kirchberg – Wil .
Attractions
The St. Iddaburg is a regional excursion and pilgrimage. The Alt-Toggenburg castle is on the list of cultural assets in Kirchberg SG .
