history

The hamlet of Niederarnegg was first mentioned in the period from 721 to 736 under the name Ahornineswanc (later Arnang ) in the oldest document about a donation to the St. Gallen monastery . Since then, the monastery of St.Gallen has acted as the landlord: for example, on January 3, 1396, when a Heinrich schoolmaster from St.Gallen sold the tithe of Niederarnegg, a fief of the St. Gallen monastery, to Heinrich Changeli and his children. In 1510 Arnegg (Niederarnegg) belonged to the Gossau court and part of the parish of Andwil. Oberarnegg formed a separate bailiwick of the Lords of Andwil.

When the canton of St. Gallen was founded in 1803, the parish boundaries became the boundaries of the political communities. Arnegg thus belonged to the municipality of Andwil. Just three years later, due to disputes over corporation and poor estates, the cantonal government arranged for Niederarnegg (Arnegg) and the farms Geretschwil, Fronackern, Herzenwil, Wilen, Zinggenhueb, Stöcklen, Hölzle and Erlen to be re-incorporated into Gossau. Arnegg has remained a school (primary school) and church in Andwil to this day. In 1895 the Andwil and Arnegg water cooperatives merged to form the Andwil-Arnegg water supply cooperative.

The Arnegg village corporation was founded in 1921 to introduce street lighting and street maintenance. Today she represents the interests of the Arnegg residents vis-à-vis the authorities in Gossau and Andwil. The village corporation is organized as a community with a citizens' assembly. When electing the authorities in the municipality, school and parish, it safeguards local interests and advocates improved infrastructure. Organs of the community are the citizenship, the board of directors and the business audit committee.

In 1876 it was connected to the Bischofszellerbahn (railway line Gossau- Sulgen ). Economically there was only agriculture in Arnegg until the 20th century, to which a grass drying plant was added in 1941, a slaughtering cattle cooperative in 1942 and a potato drying plant in 1950.

Economically, there was only agriculture until hand embroidery found its way into Arnegg at the end of the 19th century. The family company JGHelfenberger, which was run by Johann Gottlieb Helfenberger until the end of the First World War , employed up to 200 home workers. As a result, the first industrial company was established under Otto Marbach, which was taken over by Robert Saladin in 1944 and traded as "Neue Weberei Arnegg AG". This was followed by OBI, a cider factory with a warehouse (and a mill with a silo in 1963). The motorway connection and the local planning in 1968 led to a more rapid development with the settlement of new craft and commercial enterprises (1990 office furniture factory Lista) and new residential areas.

The population has increased rapidly since the 1960s with around 250 inhabitants. In 2007 Arnegg had 1696 inhabitants, a little more than ten percent of the population of the city of Gossau.
