history

Blank from a bond of the St. Gallische Kantonalbank from approx. 1900

The St.Galler Kantonalbank was founded in 1868 as a public-law institution based in St. Gallen. From 1973 to 1991 Hans Hurni was the central president of the bank. After the revised Cantonal Bank Act came into force in 1999, the St.Galler Kantonalbank was converted into a stock corporation in 2000 and the previous name of the St. Gallische Kantonalbank was changed to St.Galler Kantonalbank. In 2001 the company was partially privatized and went public on the SIX Swiss Exchange . The canton holds 51 percent of the shares.

In 2002, Hyposwiss Privatbank AG in Zurich was purchased and with it the geographic expansion beyond the actual core area of the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden. In 2003, the takeover of Bank Thorbecke AG in St. Gallen followed, which was subsequently integrated into the St.Galler Kantonalbank. In 2008, St.Galler Kantonalbank took over the Geneva-based private bank Anglo Irish Bank (Suisse) SA with its offices in Geneva , Lisbon and Porto and renamed it Hyposwiss Private Bank Genève SA . Since May 2009 the St.Galler Kantonalbank has been represented by a wholly-owned subsidiary in Munich .

In order to be able to work in its most important foreign market, Germany, the St.Galler Kantonalbank has been represented since 2009 with a wholly-owned subsidiary St.Galler Kantonalbank Deutschland AG based in Munich . In 2011 another branch was opened in Frankfurt am Main .

In 2013, the St.Galler Kantonalbank decided to focus its strategy and concentrate on the home market of Eastern Switzerland as well as the markets in the rest of Switzerland and Germany. As part of this focus, she sold the cross-border asset management business with Eastern Europe and Latin America to the Swiss private banks Falcon Private Bank Ltd. or to Banque Privée Espirito Santo Falcon Privatbank. It also sold its subsidiary Hyposwiss Private Bank Genève SA to the asset management company Mirelis Trust SA, part of the Mirelis Financial Group, which has been based in Geneva since 1949. The acquired bank will continue to operate under the previous name Hyposwiss Private Bank Genève SA.

In 2018 the St.Galler Kantonalbank celebrated its 150th anniversary. With 7 million francs, it supported 39 projects that create new perspectives and ideas and enrich living together in their region.

In 2019, the St. Galler Kantonalbank completed a capital increase . 420,240 registered shares (including 204,115 to existing shareholders) were issued at a price of 420 francs, which strengthened the bank's equity base by over 176 million francs. There are also plans for 2019 to increase the nominal value of the share by CHF 10 to CHF 80 per share.

State guarantee and rating

The St.Galler Kantonalbank has a state guarantee and is rated Aa1 by the rating agency Moody's . In the Cantonal Council of the Canton of St. Gallen more extensive privatization and related cancellation of the state guarantee was discussed. At the beginning of June 2013, however, the Cantonal Council decided to keep the state guarantee and majority shareholding of the canton unchanged.

Starting field diamond

The Startfeld Diamant young entrepreneur prize, endowed with 50,000 francs , has been awarded to innovative companies by the St.Galler Kantonalbank since 2012. The leading SME bank in the region supports and promotes a total of five companies in close cooperation with Startfeld with advice, training and prize money totaling 50,000 francs. But even more important is the access to a broad knowledge and contact network throughout Eastern Switzerland, which the start-up companies gain through this.
