Quarten is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland . The Catholic parish of Mols-Murg-Quarten is part of the Walensee pastoral care unit established in 2007 .
geography
The German-speaking community of Quarten has 2937 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) and an area of 61.9 km². The lowest point is the Walensee at 419.3 m above sea level. M. , the highest of the Magerrain with 2523.7 m above sea level. M. The community consists of the villages Oberterzen , Unterterzen , Quarten , Quinten , Mols , Murg SG and Tannenbodenalp .
The municipality of Quarten is located in the foothills of the Alps (parts of the Flumserberge belong to Quarten) and the municipality extends both north (Quinten) and south of the Walensee (other parts of the municipality Quarten).
Mols
Mols is the easternmost village in the political municipality of Quarten. In 2004 there were 563 inhabitants in Mols, compared to 530 at the end of 2016.
In 1178 the place was first mentioned as the property of Schänis Monastery ; from 1371 he belonged to Walenstadt , 1803 he joined the community of Quarten.
Murg
Murg lies on the southern bank of the Walensee on an alluvial cone of the Murgbach. Murg is first mentioned in a document on January 30, 1045 by Heinrich III. Certificate issued in Zurich . In this, King Heinrich takes the Schänis monastery and its possessions, including Murga (former name of Murg), under his protection.
You can reach the Murg lakes from Murg via the Murg Valley . Murg is known for the extraordinary occurrence of the sweet chestnut. In 2004 there were 707 inhabitants in Murg, at the end of 2016 767.
The camping site and the lido are located directly on the shores of Lake Walen. To the south of the station, the buildings of the former Murg spinning mill tower over the Catholic Church.
Oberterzen
The middle station of the gondola lift from Unterterzen to the Flumserberge is in Oberterzen . In 2004 there were 300 inhabitants in Oberterzen. At the end of 2016 there were 338 inhabitants. There were also 42 residents in Tannenbodenalp.
Fourths
The local community of Quarten is the namesake for the political community Quarten, but not its administrative seat. In 2004 the village of Quarten had 393 inhabitants. At the end of 2016 there were 381 residents. Below the Quarten village church is the Neu-Schoenstatt Education and Holiday Center, run by the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary .

The village of Quinten, which had 41 inhabitants at the end of 2016 (in 2004 there were 56 inhabitants) on the north shore of Lake Walen, can only be reached on foot or by boat. As a car-free village, Quinten is a popular intermediate and end point for hikes. Due to its special location on the sunny side of the Walensee and at the foot of the Churfirsten, Quinten has a southern climate with an annual mean temperature of around 12.0 ° C, where grapes, figs, kiwis and other exotic plants thrive. Different types of palm also grow here.
Due to its high number of hours of sunshine and few ice days, it is known as the Gandria of Eastern Switzerland . It is one of the warmest places in Switzerland. In addition, many protected reptiles such as wall lizards, sand lizards, smooth snakes, grass snakes and aesculapian snakes live in this optimal habitat for the animals. The locals produce wine, various liqueurs and much more from the many fruits obtained.
Quinten had 171 inhabitants in 1835. Due to a lack of rail and road connections, the village did not take part in the economic upswing after the Second World War , and many residents left the village. Today the village is doing better again thanks to tourism and the inhabitants live mainly from shipping and gastronomy. The place with its two landing stages Quinten-Au and Quinten-Dorf can be reached all year round by scheduled boat from Murg. In recent years, due to the favorable climatic conditions, silk farming has started.
Lower terzen
The town hall of the municipality of Quarten is in Unterterzen, i. H. the municipality of Quarten is in Unterterzen. At the end of 2016 Unterterzen had 770 inhabitants. The headquarters of the Walensee shipping company, called Schiffsbetrieb Walensee AG, is in Unterterzen.
Names
The place names (thirds for three , fourths for four and fifths for five ) come from an early medieval court census of the diocese of Chur . The towns of Prümsch and Segons for one and two have been forgotten. There are also other Swiss villages with ordinal numbers in their names, but no further closed series of numbers like thirds, fourths and fifths.
Attractions
In Murg there is a monument to Heinrich Simon , a pioneer of democracy in Germany, who drowned in Lake Walen in 1860.
On the occasion of a renovation in the Catholic parish church of St. Johannes in Murg in 2016, four colored windows by Christoph Stoos from Lucerne were installed in the south wall facing the Murgbach. The church is a typical representative of the churches built in the 1970s (foundation stone laid in 1976). The pews are arranged in a semicircle around the altar . The church service room forms a structural unit together with the parish center, the secretariat and the parish apartment as well as the mortuary of the cemetery immediately next to it.
In the St. Anna Chapel in Oberterzen with the glass windows created by the artist Ferdinand Gehr , the nativity scene friends create a nativity scene with carved wooden nativity scenes every Christmas.
As of autumn 2017, the "Römerbrücke" crossing the Murgbach has been properly repaired. It brings out the red Verrucano stone typical of the area .

The municipality of Quarten is best known for its tourism. It is one of the places in the Heidiland holiday region . Parts of the Flumserberg ski region belong to Quarten. A circulating cable car in two sections connects the Unterterzen train station with Tannenboden on the Flumserberg . In winter, the Zurich S-Bahn (line S2) runs from Zurich Airport to Unterterzen on weekends . The Flumserberge are thus the first winter sports area in the Alpine region with a S-Bahn connection. In addition to the Flumserberge skiing and hiking area, Quinten is well developed for tourism.
On the site of the former cement factory, the “Resort Walensee” tourist resort was opened in the 2008/2009 winter season, one of the largest tourism projects in Switzerland in recent years.
Resort Walensee in Unterterzen is very popular with tourists from the Netherlands in winter and with tourists from the Gulf States in summer . In addition to Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland and Zell am See in Austria, Unterterzen has now (as of 2019) blossomed into the third summer destination in the Alps.

With the Mittensee-Murg motorway connection to the A3 (Zurich-Chur) and the SBB train stations in Murg, Unterterzen and Mols on the Ziegelbrücke-Sargans railway line , Quarten is easily accessible.
