geography

The settlement area of Steinach is located on mostly flat terrain on Lake Constance; the village center near the mouth of the Steinach River . To the south of the center is the Obersteinach district , which is somewhat separated , and further south there is an uphill slope towards St. Gallen . It leads to the Steinerburg , which is near the highest point ( 487  m above sea level ) in the community. Next to the Steinerburg, the terrain drops steeply to the deeply cut river bed of the Steinach.

Steinach belongs to the catchment area of the city of St. Gallen , which forms the economic and cultural center of the region.

Neighboring communities are Arbon in the west , Berg and Mörschwil in the south, Tübach and the Thurgau exclave Horn in the east .

history

Steinach am Bodensee, seen from Arbon

Steinach was first mentioned in 769 in connection with the repatriation of Otmar von St. Gallen's body from the island of Werd near Eschenz . Otmar was sentenced to starvation in 759, then pardoned and sentenced to life imprisonment on the island of Werd, where he died that same year. Ten years later, monks from the St. Gallen monastery brought the body back to their monastery across Lake Constance and along the Steinach. At that time, a farm with the name Villa Steinaha and a landing stage for ships are noted in the area of today's Steinach .

A document from 782 mentions a donation of land to the St. Gallen monastery. In 1459 the bailiwick of Steinach was ceded to the city of St. Gallen, which had the Gredhaus built in 1473. The building that still exists today served as a granary. In 1490 the city of St. Gallen ceded the bailiwick of Steinach to the prince abbey of St. Gallen . In 1529 the Reformation was carried out in Steinach , which ended in 1532 with the return to the old faith. Tübach was also part of the Steinach parish until 1742.

During the Helvetic Republic from 1798 to 1803, Steinach belonged to the canton of Säntis , then to the newly founded canton of St. Gallen . From 1803 to 1832 the neighboring towns of Tübach and Berg were also part of the political municipality of Steinach.

Population and religion

Between 1850 and 2000, Steinach's population quadrupled from around 750 to around 3,000 and has increased slightly since then. Many jobs were created in the late 19th and 20th centuries in the neighboring, heavily industrialized Arbon, which led to a corresponding influx.

At the end of 2016, the foreign resident population had a share of 21%. The Steinachers gave the following information about denomination: Catholic 44%, Protestant 24%, other denominations or non-denominational 32%.

Attractions

Sights include the Steinerburg and the Gredhaus, a house that used to be used to store grain. It was built in 1473.

traffic

Steinach has had a stop on the Romanshorn-Rorschach lake line since December 9, 2007 . The route is operated alternately with the S7 (Weinfelden - Romanshorn - Rorschach) and the S8 (Rorschach - Schaffhausen) of the St. Gallen S-Bahn every half hour. A connection to the rail network was only possible with a long delay: Steinach lost out on the construction of the rail line, which opened in 1869, as only the neighboring Horn received a station in the dispute over the rail connection.

Steinach is connected to the surrounding communities and St. Gallen by the PostBus Switzerland bus network . The S-Bahn and bus services are integrated into the Ostwind tariff association .

The A1 motorway is easily accessible via the motorway slip road. The journey time to St. Gallen is around 10 minutes and to Zurich around an hour.

economy

Before industrialization , agriculture and fishing were the dominant branches of business, and from the 17th century onwards, linen production was also part of the business . Their importance declined again with the triumphant advance of cotton at the end of the 19th century, but was replaced around 1900 by the introduction of the embroidery industry. This in turn was hit hard by the economic crisis of the 1920s and 1930s.

After the Second World War , numerous industrial companies were established in Steinach. This development continues to this day. In metal processing, it is STI Surface Technologies (formerly Hartchrom AG), which at times belongs to the Arbonia-Forster Group, and the Trunz Group. In 1974, Hügli-Nahrungsmittel AG moved from neighboring Arbon to Steinach. Tyco Electronics Logistics AG (formerly AMP) produces connectors for the automotive industry, and Variosystems AG is a service provider for the electronics industry. The production facility of the Mörschwil window manufacturer swisswindows AG (formerly Dörig Fenster, today part of the swisspor group) is located in a former hall of the Arboner Saurer-Werke . Raiffeisenbank Steinach, which today belongs to Raiffeisenbank Regio Arbon, was founded in 1923.

In the center of the village there is a supermarket from Volg .
