The RUSI Journal (formerly: Journal of the Royal United Services Institute for Defense Studies; Journal of the Royal United Service Institution; Journal of the United Service Institution) is an academic journal for security and defense policy and military history .

It has been published by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) since 1857 and by the Routledge publishing house in Abingdon since 2003 , an imprint of Taylor & Francis , and is considered one of the world's oldest journals of its kind. It is peer-reviewed and appears bimonthly . The editor is the historian Emma De Angelis . The current Advisory Board consists of well-known military historians and security experts from the Anglo-American and German regions such as Jeremy Black , Sir Rodric Braithwaite , Eliot A. Cohen , Norman Friedman , Beatrice Heuser , Brian Holden Reid , John Nagl and Sir Malcolm Rifkind .

After starting out as the Journal of the Royal United Service Institution in the 19th century , it quickly became one of the most important military periodicals of the Victorian era . Technical essays and contributions to discussions on security and defense policy have been published to this day. In the initial phase, British officers in particular obtained information about the latest technology and the military potential of neighboring armed forces on the European continent. Since 1972 it has been known under the name RUSI Journal . It is aimed primarily at officers, politicians, defense experts and security advisors.
